(916) 635-6970 By Gil Ortmayer About 80 riders and 400 spectators ascended on the Elmer Lorence Ranch Sunday. Feb. 26 Dear Portland. where idle land was put to good use. Land that has been in soil bank was turned over to the Shamrocks Two-Wheelers fOI motorcycle racing and a good job they did of pleasing the spectators. Tbe club chose a course that lay between two small hills with the center of the track being in the bottom of the little valley. Altbough. the course was generally fast. there were two areas where the riding got very rough. One was a sbort washboard at the bottom of a hill and the other was an area in some trees half way around the course. This allowed single file traffic only. Needless to say. some riders tried to make a double lane wi thout success. This area was partially in a small creek bottom where water only flows when th.ere are heavy rains. Anyway this section was soft enough that the trench dug by a day's traffic of racing was so deep the track was rerouted for the Open Ma1n Event. Because of the size of the course ('lrI of a mile) and the time it took to get around it (3 minutes) the Shamrocks eliminated the trophy dashes. Bill Cook on a 650 Triumph led all Open class MotO-Crossers to a final first with Harvey Crawley 2nd on his rare (in this area anyway) 360cc C-Z. Larry Mascot on a 0&65 Matchless took 3rd. Marv Crawley was riding cautiously after being totally blinded for three days by mud two weeks previous in another scrambles event. Hey, Wait For Mel Ike Reed on his 250cc C-Z dominated that class with a win in both the heat race and the 250 A-Main. Jiouny Smith was Ike's closest rival in the main until Sta·lube SPF Motorcycle Oils are Special Precision Formulated from acarefully selected petroleum base stock, combined with anti·fouling, anti·seizing ad· ditives plus the proper mixture of esters of castor to add life and length to the run. Photo bJ Gil OrbUJer, the 2nd laP. when Jim missed a shift. By the time he was underway aga1n Ike had a twenty-five yard lead. As though missing the shift wasn't enough to lose a race by, Jim bad to tag one of the tires which marked the course. This knocked him down and in the ruckus his throttle stuck. Jim went to pick up the bike and away it went wi thout him. After staying up-right by itself for about thirty feet it stopped. Jim ran over, picked it UP and was off in time to get a fourth place. Larry Parker was the bad luck man of the day. In the first lap of the 175cc Moto-cross he lost his seat (off the motorcycle) in the washboard section of the track. Nonetheless Larry went on to win easily. Eric Forester on a pOtent little Hodaka secured a first place in the lOOcc Main by laying back in third. letting Gary Kapus and Phil Pbar ride their hearts out for two laps. In the third laP Kapus lost it. then Phar got stuck in the trencb. Forrester took over then and 'Was ne ver bead ed. The meet was well planned. well run and very exciting. I will pass on a rumor that there may be a Northwest Championship run on this track. If this materializes in the next month or so. we should like to see some of the Northern California riders here to join us.
