ENDUROS ARE
**************
FUN
****************
FOR BEGINNERS
By Dick Wright
Enduros are fun for beginners as well
as for the experienced desert rider. This
year there are five enduros scheduled in
District 37, starting with the Shamrocks
M.C. Enduro April second, 14 miles
north of Mojave. (more information on
Calendar of Events)
In this article we are goiDg to at·
tempt to help the new rider, who is interested in getting into some mild motorcycle competition out in the desert,
where speed is not necessarily the prime
factor. To start with we doD't recommend that a rider take a fully equipped
street bike, and try to ride it in a enduro,
so we will start with preparation and
equipmeDt, which involves taking the
lights orr, fitting dirt L\res, air cleaner,
lower gearing and speedometer. A good
watch, mounted on the bike or around
your neck is important. A license and
muroerarerecommended. Clothing should
include gloves, boots, helmet and a
warm jacket.
The Shamrocks M,C. are having a 3·
loop run totaling in 125 miles. the start.
lunch and finish are all in Cincos Res'
taurant. The trail bikes go the first loop
of 45 miles. To quote one of the Sham-
ELSINORE NIGHT LIFE
By DOD WaIJeD
The threat of rain and cool weather did not dampen the spirits of 9
riders, wives and friends who came early and stayed late for the Elsinor
scrambles this cool March night. Since the announcement that the District 37
Championship will be run by the Gripsters M.C. on ,April 9th, at Elsinore
activity seems to be picking up, especially in the off times when the track i
open for practice. From a distance on a day like Sunday, the sound of th
Hondas, mixed with the Yamahas, Suzukis, and the Bultacos sounds like
hive of giant bee s.
Hybrid Tri-Aco
Riding an interesting bike made with
a Bultaco Metisse frame, tank, fenders
and wheels, but with a 500 Triumph engine, is Dave Brooks, an Elsinore regular, who also rides a Bultaco 175 in the
Novice ranks well enough to catch a
first in the main. The Tri-aco was built
by Don paysc and is sponsored bY John
Garrish.
250 Experts Tussle
A large field of 250 Experts battled
it out for the honors. The winner of the
first two motos and at least the moral
victor was Tom Warren, Bultaco mounted.
Tom did an endo along with Chuck Hatcher in the last mota, suffering a broken
collarbone. Tom was overheard saying,
·O.K. lay it on me, what happened?·
Tom had to battle his way past such
riders as Chuck Hatcher, who made his
bi-monthly trip from Las Vegas, Nevada
with a fresh Bultaco that runs strong!
Good riding Chuck! In this bash running
very well was R. James, Suzuki mounted
who caught a first and a second place
looking very smooth and sure. In the
Novice division, D. Brooks did the job
on his Bultaco against D. Davis and T.
Clarks on Triumphs.
Stuff and Things
The big bike boys put on quite a
show. Experts Mike Van Acker, on a
Triumph was riding hard all night, winning them all. Mike looks like he has
his own fan club, judging from the large
number of suPporters with him. Arvil
Spar ks did the job to the 500 Experts on
a Triumph with R. Nichols, Triumph
mounted, and M. Chamberlin in third. A
regular at Elsinore and a big help around
the track, is R. Marquis on a 350 Honda
who has been riding here about one and
one half years. Rick has been sorting
out bike problems here but used to be a
regular winner. He rides a 350 against
the 500 Experts.

$3.00-Post Entry will be $4.00.
If you and your friends want to enter
lS a three man team, then your num bers
will be drawn March 29, 1967 at Sunland
Park at 8:30 p.m. Also it is smart to
come to the run at least two hours early
so you can check out the time schedule,
get instructions and check your bike over.
As mentioned before, the trail bikes
will go the first loop of 45 miles only.
The second and third loop will be a little
rougher. Each loop finishes at the same
pit area, so if you run into pro blems you
can always stop after the first loop or
the second loop. Also there is always a
clean-up crew that goes around the
course to see if anyone has broken down.
It is always good to come out with a
wddy so you can help each other in
case of a break-down.
The desert is reaJ)y nice this time of
year, cool and brisk in the morning and
DOt 100 hot in the afternoon, so get your
equipment organi zed and come on out.
Also, reel free to write iD if you have
any questions or suggestions, as Cycle
News will be having some more articles
about Enduros in the weeks to come.

Trailing Parties Recommended
It would be mysuggestion that a rider
have a minimum of three recent desert
trailing parties under his belt before
signing UP for an enduro. Practicl! the
sandwashes, as well as the open trails
as you will be riding in Hare & Hound
type territory. If this is the first competition of any kind that you have entered, we recommend that you just concentrate on negotiating the trail, and try
to keep UP with the riders iQiront of you.
An Enduro works just like a sports car
rally. This means you will be riding
against the clock, trying to maintain a
schedule set UP by the promoting club.
(A.n example would be a 24 miles average
or 2 miles for each 5 minutes, there are
twelve five minute periods in each hour
or 12 times 2 miles in 24 miles an hour).
There will be check points on the course
where they will note down your time.
The checks will be not less then 5 miles
apart.
When talking about rules, I would like
to recommend the book written by Lynn
Wineland, ·Motorcycle Sport·, published
by Petersen Pu blishing Company 5959
Hollywood Blvd. Los Angeles. Phone
HO 6-2111, The $2 book covers all
phases of the sport, and there is a very
good chapter on enduros written by Bob
Steffan a member of the Shamrock M.C.
and winner of quite a few enduros.
When talking to Wineland about enduros be gave the following pointers,
·a new rider sbould waste his first enduro, find out what it is all about, learn
to ride the trails, enjoy the ride and
doD't be disappointed if you don't win a
trophy the first time out. TheD you will
be ready the next time to go out after
the gold. Also remember it is hard to be
early, so try to keep up a consistent
pace. Try to avoid beiDg late,·
Getting back to the Shamrocks Enduro, send your application in before

Below: These steep downhill trails are
not dangerous. despite the appearance.
Tips to rememb er: Easy use of front
brake, put in gear (use compression release on a single cylinder (4-stroke),
allowing engine to act as air pump; stay
back on Saddle, don't lock legs under
bars. Use low gear with throttle off and
ease down with gentle use of both brakes
and playing with clutch.
