SCRAMBLIN' AROUND By \Iaureen Lee There is quite a bit of good news around in the air these days. The first "goody" bit is that nn March 19th, Bob Andrews of "Man's World" in the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner will be out witb his staff at the Sportsmen ~.C. scrambles at Perris. Marsha Dunsay of Edw. Gottlieb and Associates, a big public relations firm with the MS&ATA, called Cycle News for assistance in getting this going and my boss happily turned me loose on tbe project figuring I've been ·scramhlin· around- long enough now to know the ropes, so now we are all doing our best, including the Perris management and the Sportsmen. New Scrambles Track Another bitof good news is that there are three new tracks under consideration right now, and the hope is that out of these three surely the guardian angel of motorcycle riders will see that we get one of them! We attended the first meeting about one located out near Lake Mathews and saw first hand what goes on when you have a session with a County Board of Supervisors! On one hand were the ranchers and property owners all concerned about noise, dust, soil erosion with "uncontrolled" motorcyclists riding UP and down tbe hills, castor oil fumes, beer cans plus tbe fact they didn't want the "element· in their vicinity. an the other side was our little group trying vainiy to show that we really weren't out to demolish the territory. The remark about the element really mad yours truly mad (although at a hearing one controls oneself at all costs!) but we did go on record that we don't consider ourselves or other competition riders as HA's. Next time, we'll field an A-I team but shortage of notice stopped this one from getting off the ground properly. Eve ryone had seemed friendly to the idea of the track ... until the last minute. Then boom! We went down with all flags flying on this hearing, but there will be another one. Tucson TT Team? How about fielding a "Team for Tucson· on March 12th? We went last year and as other California riders who have been there know, the track is bichin! On March 12th there isn't a scrambles out here so let's all scoot over there and see if we can hring back some of the gold. We'll be there, trusty note book, camera and Hodaka in band and we already have a good few interested who can take care of themselves in the corners! Keith Mashburn, #4 lightweight on his trusty Greeves is hoping to go, and John Rice and Monty Darling are seriously thinking about it. Do you really think we ought to let John R. out of California? We barely believe his riding around here, but if he goes somewhere he's not even been seen before they are likely to think he's a mirage and not score him! paved the way for the antics provided by the 250cc Novices who were UP and down and all over the track. Off and On To Win One of the best races of tbe day was tbe 250cc Expert Main. Mark Brelsford, a 17-year-old who rides like Dick Mann, led the pack all the way around. During his heat race, Mark was invol ved in a four man spill wbich resulted in him getting up and blasting away and ahead. Bob Roche, 5aV, should bave won the 500cc Novice event, but went down. In Bob's last 12 races he has been off the line and into the first turn 11 times and once second. Wbile doing this, he looks like a "Sunday-sane street rider.· Don Stover 4E, bad it all the way and lapped all but the second place man during the 500 Amateur-Expert event. It was really a fine example of good racing and ambitinus enthusiasm by all cone erned. (Results on page 16) POET'S comers where life is at threat and our guts fill our mouths from the speed that we set. We scream over jumps and never take heed, we barrel down chutes at a Oat breakneck speed. The Spirit of Racing is well ...derstood and everyone comments ·you're sure lookin good,,- CORNER According to Jim McGill, of Stockton, who sent this poem in, Jim Foster is a good amateur racer who came up fast. He wrote this poem six months after his first race. This was, and still is "Gentleman Jim's· feeling on racing. Mr. McGill reports. "THE SPIRIT OF RACING" The Spirit of Racing runs through our veins, it pounds through our bodies like the th...der from rains, H hurls US in The chances we take will make you take note, and when SOmeone gets off there's a lump in your throat, but you'll never see tears or hear cries of great pain. That's the Spirit of Racing that runs through our veins. The Irons that we straddle aren't always the best but somehow tbey manage to meet the bard test, they splutter and smoke in the heat race, that's true, and if too far off time our racing day's through, After the Heat Race down in the pits you'U find Tuners all swapping their bot racing tips. They file the points and change the plugs and tighten the loose and rounded head lugs, Now finally you've made it, you're riding the main, your heari's going crazY and blood fills your brain. That's the spirit of racing tbat runs through our vein The Main Event's fast and the fa te t is you, yo... hand grips the throttle till your fingers tum blue, Your leg is extended supporting your weight and the pressure behind you you suddenly hate, you're sliding through corners but your Iron's a taste low then appears that front wheel that's a-huggin the pol e, you strain all your muscles to get hack in shape and you lead him by inches down the main straight, He's pushing you hard but you know you can win so you pull her in tight cause your lead is so thin, Your body is aching and your mouth is all dry then before you it appears: you see the Checkered Flag lly, Well you've done it, You've won, a weU hard fought Main and tbat's the spirit of racing man that runs through Our veins. By Gentleman Jim Foster, 5e HARLEV- DAVIDSON Of Long Bill Sarlentl neatly squares the corner and continued on to win, Here comes that tum alaln!
