/lNTICS /IT /lNDERSON or Can the Boys [10m the Megalopolis Enjoy Tbemselves in the Piney Woods? By Doug Richmond I hesitated more than a little when Bill Dunbar (33x) and Don Murray (SSc) invited me with them up to Anderson, California on February 19. But Bill assured me that he'd ridden against many of the boys from that neck of the woods, and they were a sharp bunch. Could go fast, too. That settled it! I heaped my cameras in Bill's pickup along with the 'motorcycles, tool boxes, leathers. stands, oU and all the other bits and pieces that a racer packs around with him. Arriving at Anderson, we found tbe course lald out on old half-mile track at the fair/rodeo grounds, using two of the half-mile turns and the back straight, with a few lefts and rights in front of the grandstand to make a scrambles out of it. The jump was a plywood ramp. not a hump of dirt. I suppose the club felt duty-bound to patronize the local lumber industry. Amateur Jerry (62q) Landry c....e 270 miles from Gilroy to take second oyer all, Ilrst Amateur In the 650 Am-Ex. Main Eyent. Riders arrived [rom as far away as GUroy. and these guyS had driven right by a race at San Rafael and an additionall90 miles to get here. They were there from San Jose. Oakland. Rio Vista - so help me, I've never seen riders come so far to a spOrtsman scrambles. I soon found out why. Tbe track was fast, fast. fast. The Shasta Motorcycle Club was not only well organized. Punctual and thorough. but the officers and members went out of the way to help the visitors. One guy went up to a fIiend of mine and gave him his phone number, offering to find more economical accomodations than motels the next time up. And they even ran tlie Trophy Dashes as 3-lap Flat Tracks. It is little things like this that explains why so many (almost a hundred) riders were willing to come so many miles to particiPate in a local clUb event, even passing big events to get to Anderson! Personally, 1 always have a good time at races, hut it makes a lot of difference when a club really goes iill out to help - it makes the reporting a heckuva lot easier! And I hope I'm able to attend the next scrambles UP in the Piney Woods!
