The American Fifty Association held
their second race of the 1967 season
Sunday, February 12th.
Sunday's race was a Moto Cross
over a 2.6 mile course near Cajon Pass•
There were spills galore and riding in
professional, not-so-professional and
amateur styles.
All 42 riders were lined UP ahreast
and after a 200 yard free-for-all settled
down into an almost follow the leader
race to the first check point. From then
on it was a banzai effort on every
rider's part. Passing on uphills, down
hills, through sand, small rocks and
every possible type of terrain. Sharp
left turns followed from checkpoints.
These were sharp right turns, even 45
degree slopes and some 60 degree banks
to climb.
The pack thinned out, as usual,
when a rider would get stal!ed on a
steep down hill and everyone would
pile UP behind him waiting and jockeying for position to pick up a place or
two,
The three events were run in three
classes: 0 - 6l1cc, 66 - 8l1cc and 86 12Occ,
Races 1 and 3 were run counter
clockwise. For variety, A.F.A.'s. Rod
Montgomery ran the second race clockwise. The course was beautifully laid
out and was easily followed, but it
taxed the riders skills.
In the 50cc Class young Larry
Roeseler ran his second race with a
fiat front tire. He placed 1-2-1.
The weather was perfect, the crowd
large and enthusiastic and there were
no reported injuries.
These small hikes never cease to
amaze one. They would give an awful
lot of 175-200cc's a sound trouncing on
this course.
Most brands were well represented,
Honda 5-90, Hodaka, Suzuki, Yamaha,
Tohatsu, and we hope we haven't left
out any brand.
The pit racing was also in evidence,
as the small bike races seem to attract
about every available smal! street bike
in the counta.
We'll see you next month, same
place, same time.

With more motorcycle racing than
usual going on this weekend, the sixth
Elsinore scrambles can be considered a
huge success. A good group of riders,
friends, wives, etc. came out in weather
that was cool and clear for the 45 events.
The track condition, which was better
than ever, was the objectofmanycompliments.
Consistent Performance
The most consistent performance of
the night and certainly one of the most
memorable was that of Chris Smith, age
11, riding a 100cc Kawasaki. He has
only been racing six months and has
been coming out to Elsinore regularly
with his dad and brother,Mark. He wants
to be a Pro, really likes racing, has
ridden Perris once and Prado once. He
likes Elsinore most of all, he says.
Chris, Mark and dad really make it a
family outing, cooking dinner at the
track, etc. Brother Mark has started to
ride, also really enjoys it, rot has only
ridden 2 or 3 times in races. I might add
that he seems to be smiling all the time
he is riding•

All the way from Boise, Idaho hails
Gordon Musselman, an amateur who rides
a 250 Montesa, who is now making his
home here. Gordoa came out here to ride
Ascot and was attracted by the large
number of rides a racer can get here in
Southern California. Gordon got a couple
of seconds in his heats, and rode hard in
his other races considering this was his
first race in 15 months.
Bro adsli der s· .Broadsli der
Bultaco mounted Tom Warren came
out for a ride that won't be forgotten for
a long time. In practice Tom was sliding
so low he momentarily caught his left
unger on the ground and suffered a slight
cut. Tom won both his heats plus the
main, and was chased by such riders as
R. Killingsworth, Bultaco mounted, and
Jim Hart in 3rd on a Triumph CUb. Tom
says Elsinore is "the most" and he likes
the tight course that it is.
