The American Cycle Association's idea to bave a motocross series for
riders wbo want to play at European-type scrambling surely attracted tbe
attention of tbe Gods with the first running January 22nd. To give the local
contingent tbe proper atmospbere right from tbe start, it rained and rained
and RAINED.
Castaic is a fairly short, viciously twisting circuit with almost straightup-and-down hills that rapidly became vicious grey mud. Although it bad
rained some of the night and all the morning with a forecast of all-day storming, the turnout was good. Some of the riders took one look and went home.
others practised and then decided that they had had it for one reason or
another and went home. including the formidable Malcolm Smith (what would
Torsten say?) But after a few laps for some it became a personal challenge
to finish and come what may they rode on until either they 0 r their mount
fell flat!
But with all the slop and glue. with mud down the neck and sticking
throttles shut. haVing at times to take three runs to get up a hill. the riders
still kept returning to the starting line.
Wes Cooley. promoter of the series. says the Silver Cup is to give the
seriously minded motocross rider a chance to tune up. This one Sunday was
not for the rider with no experience in hills or rough. muddy going (even in
good weather the course is a cob).
Gary Conrad, the wlnnah!
