Samuelson, -Motorcycle training is a new program that the Long Beach Police Motor Patrol Association is trying to start in the Long Beach Area. We are at present concerned with motorcycles and motor-driven scooters. From 1961 to 191:5. there was an increase of218% of registrations of motorcycles - over the same period of time there was an increase of 246% in accidents which were either fatal or caused injuries. We decided to try to do something about it. We are starting a Motor School and Safety Class. This will be only for civilian riders - it has nothing to do with police officers who train them. The object of the Motor School is to promote good and sale riding on the part of civilian riders. At present our agenda is set up for four 2-hour sessions to be held on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until 12 noon. We are going to run one class through at a time so that we can keep track of the students - we will compile statistics on the attendees oYer a period of years. It is a good program. We thought that someone should try and do something about alleviating motorcycle accidents. There will be no charge for the Motor School and Safety Class. AIl the students have to do is to attend the classes - we ask only t1lIO things of them (1) complete the course (2) complete a questionnaire we send them one year alter graduating in order to gather statistics. Tbe program has been engineered scientifically, combined with good films, lectures, and riding procedures. It the student doesn't know how to ride, we will teach him from the ground up. Also. I have talked with the Chief of Police, Mr. Bill Mooney, about the Program. We will bring the program to the military, if they so desire, rather than have the personnel come to us, and train them at military bases. Any military command having a large number of prospective attendees may request that we present the program at their base. We wi11 set up a program specifically for military personnel. However, we would be very happy for the military personnel to come to us and attend the class. Our second class will start in Febmary.· Officer Samuelson also related that applicants may obtain applications from the Long Beach Motor Patrol Association, P.O. Box 20100, Long Beach, California or from the Long Beach Police Department, Trallic Division. 415 East Broadway, Long Beach, California. THE BIG WHEEL IS HERE!
