Are you READY for this ., e Slory and Pholos by Robert O. Fee Nature rained on the southern California road riders Sunday, Jan. 22. Wet and treacherous roads resulted in several minor upsets. The Never Readies M.C. were ready for the soggy weather. ho~ ever, with a dance hall reserved near Riverside for the activities at the finish. Ace of Clubs M.C. riders enter the parking lot after a wet run, the Never Readies retired to the kitchen to figure the poker results. Following their announcement of the trophy winners, names were drawn for merchandise and gift winners. Several riders found their motors drowned out when they wanted to leave. Despite the weather all the riders seemed to enjoy the activities and made jokes about their dampness. Bob Decker and Ted Armenta check the skies. One hundred and fourteen ride'l's and passengers were more or less ready and signed in at Joe Walker's Santa Ana Hadey-Davidson store. They rode the Riverside Freeway 10 Corona for the first check point. Turning south, the riders foUowed Highway 71 into Elsinore lor another check. Tra veling east, they crossed route 395 and turned oorth on Wincbester Road 10 Highway 79. Reo crossinc 395, the route intersected with Van Buren Blvd. which the cyclists took north 10 Mama Borelli's resta..ant, 6 miles moth nf Artinclon. Marna's unpaved parking lot was fairly finn when most of the riders arrived, but by 4 p.m. with the heavy rain. someone remarked that the lot resembled a hog wallow. A couple of the heavilyladen 74's settled slowly on their sides. Johnny Campbell and his Four Gents (all Never Readies) were ready by noon and struck UP their western band. The warm and cozy riders danced to their music until 3 p.m. Cyclists continued to arrive, soaked and sopplnC, right up to 3 o'clock when Lucky Odie The N ever Readies reported tha t the reduced attendance cut out the eXPected profit, but the run didn't ·go into the hole,· financially. Odie Porterfield of Norwalk won the Poker Run sweepstakes trophy with his King high heart flush. Just two weeks before, Odie won the sweepstakes award from the Sociahle's M.C. Sherman Ames took the prize for having the largest family on t~e run. His wife and three children accompanied him in his two seater sidecar. Other poker winners were: Solo riders: Duane Bendict, Les Dinesan and Ron Williams.
