A C CE TO SHO OUR WORT Although lbere are offlclal restrictions against making official request for such assistance, the State agencies can still see that proper key men in the motorcycle organization are alerted as to the need for riders. 10 District 37 we have hundreds of qualified persons who could form an ever-ready Volunteer Search and Rescue network. Few people know lbe wilderness areas as well as the desert hike experts and none can traverse it more quickly and thoroughly. With the firm possihilities that we shall he called, it's time to tighten up the alerting system, have the necessary gear of ropes, compass. maps. matches, food and first aid boxed, handy and ready to go. and to show the public the positive side of organized motorcycling. We've long complained that riding lands are being forbidden us. that people aren't receptive to our sport. etc. Isn't it time we took this opportuni ty to present the positive side of cross-country 'cycling by making firm action toward a public1y recognized and accepted service organization? How about it District 37? This time lbe call went out over TV and radio for American Motorcycle Association District 37 Sports Committee desert competition riders to join the search. The specific request was made to eliminate unskilled enthusiasts who might amve with good intentions. yet lacking the knowledge and endurance necessary to sustain a da,y's elforts. Thursda,y's search of the old mining district again produced nothing. The next da,y. efforts were put hack into the Piute area. primarily working wilb tracked vehicles. On saturday lbe car was spotted. ironically by tbe miss- ing man's brother, Milton Woods. It had slid off a small road and was nearly covered with snow. Teams converged on the scene and probers soon found the man's body in a sleeping bag close by. Apparently Stan Woods had tried desperately to tree lbe small car from its prisoning dltch and. failing. had gone to sleep for the night. Dealb was attributed to overexertion plus exposure. with lbe concealing snows coming later. Praise From the Captain Captain Barb expressed his personal thanks and that of his agency lor lbe cycli sts' help, lauding lbe dints lb ey bad put rortb. but most important. ae- knowledging lbe lboroughness of lbe job lbey did. Sheriff Captain Young and Lt. Shuell commented on the efficiency and cooperati ve mann er of the man from the motorcycle clubs. Proving that even motorcyclist.s can work in the snow as well. Wheeler spent lbe last several da,ys in the area on a Cycle Sno-Go - equipped with tracks behind and skis in front. Again, those authorities were impressed with what a job motorcycles can do in emergency work.
