A really TOP program on the sPOrt of motorcycling was presented January 21 on TV. With Dr. Frank Baxter hosting the show and steve Winegar doing the narration, the half-hour went all too fast. Showin g all the various types of competition events from scrambles complete with the Sidehacks, to drags at Irwindale, it switched to Riverside Raceway with a national magazine roadtesting bikes, tben on to Road Racing. Shot at Carlsbad, these scenes showed beautifully a facet of tbe sport that is too little-known. Then there was an abrupt change to some tremendous shots of a hill climb in Outlaw Canyon uP by Bakersfield. Change again to some of the Rams M.C. holding a • slow· race, with such familiars of Doug Yerkes Eddellulder FREE MOTORCYCLE AT LONG BEACH INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP THIS SATURDAY first Ascot 11 "is S••"., Close to 200 riders clash on the concrete oval at Long Beach Arena saturday night, Feb. 4th in the first state championship short track race ever held in California. A new Yamaha will be given to a lucky Cycle News reader(see coupon on page 00). Four races have produced three different winners in the fast 250cc class and all four have been won by Northern Calif. riders. Sacramento's Butch Corder is the only two time winner and will be back to try for three in a row. The new 100cc class for the ultralightweights has come up with a different winner each time out and this saturday's race should prove no different. This will be the final indoor race Eddie Mulder, 1966 AMA steeplechase national champion, tries for his win ot the '67 season this Sunday afternoon as J.C. Agajanian presents an eight-race motorcycle jump event at 2 p.m. at Ascot Park in Gardena. It will he Aggie's first steeplechase event of the new season, and he is anx· ious to get the hikes rolling on the tough Ascot twist and tum course. Mulder, who hails trom Burbank, scored an unprecedented sweep of all the National jump events last year. Eddie will get plenty of competition from the likes of Skip Van Leeuwen Dick Hammer, Jack Simmons, Gen~ Romero, Ralph White, Dan Haaby and a host of others. A full field of rna re than 125 top riders are expected to compete in the inaugural. GET WITH THE PROGRAMMAIL IN YOUR ENTRY NOW! The final race is AMA sanctioned and open to all novice, amateur and expert riders. Riders need not be licensed to practice in the afternoon. setting a snail's pace with much painsta.tfng balaDcing. The two-wheeled world or the no~ coJlllletitor received its fair share with a charming couple shown riding through Yosemite National Park and along lovely beaches, enjoying just plain tiding. Also included were shots at a road group out to demonstrate motorcycle safety. We say cheers fbr this presentation. Winegar commented several times on the need always for safety equipment such as helmets (although the ·fun riding· couple weren't always so geared) and his exPlanation as to why people ride motorcycles for either fun riding or competition purposes was lucid. Dr. Baxter was naturally most intelligent with his questions and comments, leading to a good explanation of the national workings ot the American Motorcycle Association. The photography was first-class, wi th some slow motion jump shots that were jus t beautiful. Even the hackground music was chosen witb care, ranging from stirrfng themes for the competition shots to dreamy music durin g the road sequences. We hope Channel 5 will show this again. It is the kind of publicity our sport deserves and if this particular program could be shown to a average television viewer, it could undo much of the damage that the ·The Wild Ones· did. r~i:~7i:-$1\ij(i~@iJi©----r~@iiriiii@1i~Zi(i~ : : I I = Stardust International Raceway Las Vegas, I'OfF" evada Sun.
