TRAII,m When the dust cleared away after the open class took off, the banner fell for the trail bikes. It was dusty terri tory, so I was determined to get a good start' and stay in front of it. After passing the smoke bOmb, I tucked in behind the green Buzzard jersey of Jack Froelech., somebody wearing a Rams M.e. jersey. and the two Morgan brothers. We were having a great time until we came UP to some of the slower big bikes, where in that dust and on those roads, the race became serious. After abOut 20 miles. I rounded a mountain and looked UP at a high, rocky. 10o-yard long hill with a peak at the top and fifty riders laying allover it. Twenty feet from the top I was asking myseU just what I was doing UP there and started looking for a better way around. Just then I glanced down in the canyon and saw two bikes and a spot of lime. and I realized that all of us were breakiog our necks on this hill when the course was down in the valley. Down I went, and gOt ready for the next hill, which was rough, but at least makeable. , .•. . - Abowr. Jack IIor,an In filCh" Below: first overall Bob Feno.~ Rlpl: Larry Bercqulsl. An extremely rocky course should be avoided. To top off the day, it rained right after the race. But as they say, it could have been worse.
