At lelt below Is another Trl-double rider, Dick Rlos. By Bob Ebeling Hunt to Solve Mag Problems S '" = S :;> U ... g .c No matter how you 100 k at it, the U match race next Sunday will be a sbow of power and speed as never matched before. Perry Prentice, the rider of "Stagefright" and Jim Cook, of "Flustration" will have no grudge or disrespect, only wbose ISO mile per bour Triumpb is going to beat who at Irwindale? I am grateful to the rain for tbis opportunity to ex pIa i n the reason Why street machiDes do Dot get more mDS at a drag strip. The common gripe is that too many cars run before the bikes. At almost every meet there are tbree to four bun- By Wes Cooley We couldn't win this weekend with Chief Galbraith doing tbe rain dance and the weather forecaster predicting 100% possibility. It was a real deluge on Sunday at the first ACA Silver Cup Moto cross series and the newly laid out moto cross course became a sea of mud. We were glad a few dyed-in-thewool motorcyclists wanted to ride and enjoyed themselves to the fullest at a truly European type moto cross, (including mud and rain.) If you have ever 127 Vegas Draws Near ~ dred stock cars in comparison to 30 or 40 bikes. As a result the strip will (or should) run one hundred cars for each ten bikes. They pay their entry same as you and thus deserve the same time and pri v!leges. A survey would show a maximum of 3 to 4 runs per car and this is no better than we get. The only consolation I can offer is that we never even enjoyed this much a year or so ago. So grin and bear it! Action for the Fntnre There are no words left to describe next weeks match between "Stagefright" and " Fiustration" • only the date of followed some of the European motorcycling papers and have seen pictures of moto cross riders when you could hardly distinguish the rider from the motorcycle plastered with mud, you would know how it was last Sunday. It was Quite spectacular to see the riders try to climb the 200 ft. wall of mud w hi c h, in some places, was as deep as their axles. In spite of the pouring down rain, over 100 die-hard spectators stayed the complete day, cold and soaking wet, to watch the event. Please Don't Rain on My Parade! The second event of the Silver Cup Series will be held at the same location. Castaic Park, on February 19th; that is, whatever Mother Nature does. (A complete report of the Castaic event will appear in Cycle News next week.) Looming ever larger is the date of Saturday, February 18th. Just the location of tbe Stardust Raceway at Las Vegas, Nevada, is enough to draw me to this all-cycle drag meet. The $500.00 purse, trophies, prizes and all time great show of machines from Midwest and East Coast locations provide a lot of glitter to an all ready glamorous racing package. Each day's passing adds greater importance to this cycle meet. The Mayor Of Las Vegas will be acting as honorary starter, thanks to the fine representation of bikes provided hy promoter Reg Sheldrick to the puhlic. Congratulations to Pete Hutton for being the first official en try in the Vegas meet (his picture will be On the program cover). There is also some Valvoline oil awalting his appearance in Nevada. Here's to clear weather and good racing next weekend. (ResuJts rained out) Road Racing Time On February :lth, the ACA will bold !.beir third A ... uaJ Opener road nce at Willow Springs International Raceway. This will allow !.be rellows their first opportunity since December to get their road racing equipment out, and will give !.be local riders going to Daytona an opportunll;y to test out their equipment on a long course for bandling and performance or engmes at top speeds Cor long periods or tune. The OPENER event bas always been a good test event for !.be Daytona road race. In reading over Motorcycle News from England, I found a column by Torsten Hallman who was recently in the United States from Sweden and won tbe 250 and 500cc International Professional events at this year's Corriganville. He stated "Malcolm Smith, 25, a member of the US team in Sweden's lSDT. is prohahly their best man. There is a possihility that he will compete in early 250cc world championship rounds in Europe. In my opinion, he will be really dangerous on fast courses like Branda Hate!), last year. And, with a bit more training, more Americans could make the results on this side of the Atlantic." 1 think this is a real compliment to Maicolm, since, as you know, Torsten Hallman was Wodd's Champion two years running. I also think we have some other very competitive riders that Mr. Hallman didn't get to see. -.... - SPEED ~~~ zu.D1IIE ... DISTIIIUTO.S ANAHEIM M/C SALES Tbursday. Sunday, January 29th at Irwindale Raceway with gates opening at 8:30 a.m. The forces of nature put a damper on the drag racers' enthusiasm for this weekend, throwing an even greater fncus and anticipation on next weekend's twoout-of-three match race at Irwindale Raceway. Owingto circumstances and financial security compelled Dick Rios to withdraw from the contest against Boris Murray and Jim Cook's " Flustration" • The opportunity for unseating these champions out of Foothill Cycle Center did not go unnoticed. Perry Prentice and Agnew SCott (SCOtty), two gentlemen of color, have challenged with sure determinatinn of defeating the M & C Triumph in the first two rounds. A new cam grind and fresh engines step uP the power that their twin-engine Triumph, called "Stage flight, " will use. Murray & Cook have taken similar steps in rehuilding from the bottom end up. New engine mount plates, a special disk brake assembly and complete engine re build can be just the weapons they need to prevent Perry and Scotty from taking the victory.
