Both sides of Main Street and Adams Blvd, were jammed with i touring machines as clubs rende~ voused and outriders arrived at the Los Angeles Harley-Davidson shop ~ ~ . to sign in for the one day event, :0: Three giant urns of coffee and 600 ~ doughnuts were served the riders ..:I who were bundled UP against the ~ brisk early morning temperatures. U The bright sunshine soon took the edge off the sharp cbill and most of of the entrants shed their leather lat er in the day. The route map was a masterpiece of mis-information. but no one seemed serious in their objections, The fact that there are two Valley Blvd. exits from the San Bernardino Freeway was the first confusion encoontered.. Later. in Pomona, the street named Holt had been misspellell Boyt. resulting in the majo1"' ity of riders milling around that town for a wbile. Notations meant to be approximate locations of the check points were taken by the riders to be exact and some entmnts were frantically looking for a check point that t hey bad already passed. Everyone finally made it to the finish at Legg Late Park ill EI Monte. The Sociables started individual games of • bean toss· and • throw the greased footbalr well before the deadline. Immediately follolVing the 2 p.m. deadline, best dressed and field event competition got underway. Because Widge Byrd goofed on the map. the club continued to accept riders until the pick-up crew cam e in. Those riders arriving after the deadline were eligible to enter only the coo tests remaining on the program. The Sociables kept the acti vities rolling right along. conducting several events at once. The balancing contest got a big play from the cyclists. Ken Osmond and Ge1"' aId McKinney tied with another rider by balancing their machines without a foot on the ground for 4 seconds. Ken won the event after two runoffs with a time of 3 seconds. He was astride a Triumph. The barrel roll attracted a large crowd of spectators who watched the big Barleys get aced out by a mini-bike. Burney Clark not only scooted the 50 gallon drum down the narrow lane. but in an outstanding display of control turned the drum around and returned it to the starting line. The riders putting the final polish on their motorcycles received a shock when Sociable's Referee, Jim Flynn. announced that the best dressed competition would be without motorcycles in another area. The Sociables arranged for a catering truck to be available in the parking lot for tbe rider's refreshment. Everyone took advantage of it and many were observed relaxing on the green grass wbile eating their lunch. The Sociables probably broke another record with their Sweepstakes trophy. It was donated by Dick Butchins of L.A. HarleyDavidson and stood at least 4 feet tall. Wilmers of the various cnntests ad poker _Dds are: MALE SOLO (draw) I. BlUOId SIl_erd 2. D1aDe RIple:J 3.
