Jan uary wi ll be the busi est month for raci ng ever in the southland wi th thr ee i ndoor races and one sportsmen road race at Carlsbad. T he bi g ra c e is on now tor rid ers to obtain their new AMA 1967 ra cing cards so they can compete in the co ming L on g Beach ra c es on J an ua ry 7. 14 & 21st. The road ra ce at Carlsbad does not req ui re a professiolllL1 license. hut ls open to an. and all riders . licensed. or v not. Past seasons th at ha ve come UP with money ra ces right after th e firs t of th e year ha... foun d a last minute scramble e for that all important license. Many rid ers fail to apply in time. In more than one case. rider s who are pote nnal wi nne rs get th eir applications in too lat e. The AMA offi ce in Col umbus. which handl es all applications , is not opec on week ends and ls not in rosiness for the sole purpose of taking care of new li cens e applications. like some ne w rid er s (a nd a few ol der ones) like to thi nk. T o inspire a spot on th e starting line at L ong Beach on th e 7th a rider should ha ve his app li ca ti on completed and mailed to the AMA no later than the last day of '66. Anything pas t thi s dat e is more than a gambl e, T he three L on g Beach dates next month wili again find the ar ena open all af t ern oon fo r ri ders to test th e track and machines . T he practice sessi on i s open to all ride rs. licensed or non-licensed. A rider ne ed not be licens ed in the AMA to pra cti c e. hut must have th e license to run i n the actual ra ces in January. Open Practice At L-B Again The arena will op en On the afternoon of January 7th at Noon and riders will be i ah l e to take laps until 4 p.m. ... thou t interrupti on. Any machines 250 cc and tmde r will be allowed on th e track after passing a basic ins pe cti on t ha t includes foldi ng pegs and a few othe r general rul e s re garding safety. A rider who arrives early may tak e as many as one hundred or more laps on another new track design that will he used for the first tim e on the 7th . Race promoter Don Brymer po ints out that th e riders who too k advantage or the pra cti ce last month all cam e clos e t o making th e main e vents, Dr in many cas es rod e in th e finals on the new track that was set up. B rymer . th e riders and th e fans all exp ressed a profound liking to changing the track so onc e again followers of Indoor racing can l ook forward to seeing another new shape for th e co nc rete oval on the 7th. Lone Beach has revolutionized cycle racing in that th ey are the first to Dffer riders a chance to l:llin unlimi ted prae- ' u ce on a track, prior to an e vent. T bey a re also th e fi rst t o offe r a potential ra cer a chanc e to try t he track before be obtai ns an actual li c ense t o ra c e. Once again during th e month or J a nuary. the Long Beach ra ces will hos t a two ra ce in one setup with a separate class for rid er s wit h machines 1OOcc' s and und er. Brymer and BDb DDWi s a re pion e ering this tWD class system on a trial basis and ar e the fir s t to come up w ith a special class ror t he ultra-small hik es. with known and proven expe rienc e ridi ng a gainst each ot her and not ag ai ns t the new. or first-time ra cer.
