A few hund red sp e ctators wer e ga t hered a round to watch th e anti cipat ed a cti on. Th er e was a long dry straightaway , a bout midway thr ough there was a small water hol e. A little furth er a bi gger one , then a lon g deep muddy stret ch . More than one bike s unk down past th e rear wheel. Every la p of every ra ce sa w thr ee or four st uc k bikes. Th e 60's we re the first to try th ei r lu ck, they ca me off t he li ne good with 38k P hil Harri s, l Or Vic Krill, in hi s fir st ra c e, a clo se one two , follow ed cl os ely by 117e L esli e Ros s . Ph il and Lesli e got stuck in t he fir st wa ter hol e and Krill got s lowed down. 121k Dan T oby took the lea d 'til the next wa te r hol e, where Harr is and Krill got by behind t he new le ader J erry Tyl er . T hey all took tu rns getti ng stuck or falling down, J erry fina lly s tayed up long enought to win. The mains were a repea t. Th e li ttle bikes just couldn 't get the trac tion. In th e 90 main 12 bike s s tarted, 3 fini sh ed . T he mud su re took its toll this ti me. 89g Ric h McClinlock had the bes t of it with A Bill Russell an d 159g gi ving him a hattle. All thr ee were either stuck or down severa l times during the eve nt and the lead changed quite a few time s , 89g Rich McClinloc k hung on to win. In t he 90 Am 60j got a n early lead, with 28e right behind. Aft er s everal laps 60j Paul Minor got stuc k and 28e J i m Sakada got by to go on and wi n, wit h 120k Mike Corcoran seco nd. Seven bike s started thi s heat and thes e wer e th e only two that finished. Most of th e rid er s finished th e 250 Am-Ex eve nt with 63g Jim Santone , 198z Carl Krank e and Ross Russ ell finished in that orde r. Aft er getti ng s tuc k in th e heat ra c e, Carl s ta ye d on th e outsi de of the track and had no more troubl e. In th e 500 main, all t he rid ers wer e eit her stuck or down a t one time, after a bout five or ten minut es Carl Sa ndg re n finally made it out to tak e th e wi n wit h 126k Harold Laird s ec ond. Thi s was the first ti me tha t all bi kes wer e down w ith only t wo ge tting out . In the 650 novi c e heat Ash ley J effery 132r was fi rst off th e lin e and kept the lead all the way , he seemed to hav e found the s ecret to gett i ng through the mud. He would go rea l fast out of th e second turn , slow down arou nd turn one and put both feet out and pick hi s way ca refull y thro ugh th e wat er holes and mud. In th e 650 main J effe ry s ta rted off real good and had a good lead. but los t it i n the seco nd water hole. Four more got s tuc k in th e mud. 12k Art Mies made it throu gh but it was 133k J. Camp bell who came thr ou gh to win with 114c Elmer Krau s second. Th e se were t he only two rider s to finish. In t he 650 Am-Ex main t hree of the four sta rte rs got bogged down in the mud . 40g Gene Conant made it through wit h out a hitch , led for a while los t it th en re gained it to win the hea t . Gene wa s the last of t he P et alu ma rac e team to win , it was a prett y good day fo r them. taking home fiv e tr ophies. T o bad ther e ar en' t more shops that ca n furni sh rac e teams like tha t. Cons id ering t he way th e track was the Sa cram ento Tracker s put on an excell ent event . The club officials handled e veryt hing real well. Th e best part of t he whole rac e was watching AMA Dist. Commission er L en All en. I was luck y enough to be ar ound him during the differ ent e vents , expecting him to roll in th e mud. be cau s e he was getting s o ti ckled over t he rid ers getting stuck and trying t o root enough home to pick up trophi es.
