So he deci ded to team UP with a pro rider and thus he ent e re d th e hecti c worl d of professional racing, becoming so i ntrigued that he gav e up his au to mechanic's j ob to dev ot e full time to tuni ng an d building ra cing e ngi nes . Finding the available engi nee ring and testing faciliti e s inadequat e fo r tuni ng champio ns hi p machi nery, la st year C. R. op ened the doors of his new speed and fine tuning establishment at 5210 San Fernan do Roa d in Glendale , Calif. T hi s shop is One of th e most complete in the country today and is very cl ean, nea t, orderly and most impressive whe n one wal ks in th e door . In one roo m is the fl ow meter a nd the dyno, with a hugh engi ne cooling fan a nd ventilation fan a nd duc t to carry the exha us t from the engine being dyno- tes te d. It meas ures t he fl ow of a i r that is capable of passing through a carburetor, manifold por t and cyli nde r head . In th e s a me room at t he opp osite end from th e fl ow meter is the dyn amometer . Being present when the dyno is runni ng is one of th e most fant a stic expe riences one can ha ve . Th e noi s e a nd the great feeling of po wer is almost un belie vabl e. You have to wear s pecial ear covers when th e dyno is runni ng. Axt ell's dynamometer is a powe r absorbtlon uni t, tha t is a mean s of holdin g a power plant at a given rpm and recording t he loa d i n foot pounds of torque , whi ch det ermines th e horse power of the e ngi ne .
