Earlier in the day , before the class eliminations had begun , ill luck rode with Dic k Strickland and his 650cc BSA . Dick arrived ea rly and began several repeated runs to correct his jetting, timing etc. Th er e was no indication of the impe nding disaster. At the start of this run every thing was ok , the machine came out of t he hole in a straight li ne a nd thr ough ea ch gear shirt there was not a mis s . As the BSA moved through th e timing li ghts its speed was give n as 102 mph and Strickland straightend from his tucked- in position. When speed was reduced to 20 or so mph the rider and machine met the pa vement and .an embarrassing end to a great rid e. The B gas class of 650cc machines was the hot spot , for here were the largest numbe r of ent ries. As Qualifying prog ressed it was all Triumph a nd finally a BSA and an Enfield came out to take a try at breaking that Triu mph Supremacy. Jim En z of Shell Motors had the Enfield and looked like a su re thr eat , but was forced to pack UP ea rly for an unknown rea son. The BSA was a scrambler and the owner decided it just didn 't cut the asphalt like it does dirt an d as the eliminations began it was a gai n all Triumph. Nira Johnson and his " Agtisi" sw ept the contende rs aside and won a class trophy turni ng 12.10 - 114.35 . I got it s traight from a T riumph header,tha t J ohn Hughes has de fina te plans on s topping ell, thi s "Agtisi" run of victories . W Nira was stopp ed whe n the rmal rac e was run, not by an oth er Triumph , but by th e Yamaha of Bob Bravennan. Bob took an early lead out of the hol e and Nira rea lly twisted the grip in an effort to ge t he r in the distanc e tha t sepa rated him from Bo b. When th e moti on for shifti ng was due Nira punched at the s hift lever with the effort of a flea trying to bus t a coconut an d the change never came until the second ti me and it was too l ate, fo r victory li ghts were in th e Yama ha' s lane at the end of a 12.49 105.92 mph run. " • " • Top Fuel - Irwindale And again, " F lus trati on", the twin Triumph of Murray & Cook ha s defeated the conte ndi ng Harl ey-Da vids on of SOnny Raslawski. SOnny and Jim Cook had all but drawn guns as the time for a great duel drew near. SOnny became a victim of an early de at h a s he forgot to load his wea pon.
