A View From COW PALACE Grandstands... By Patti Prestidge For the first time in Northern Calif. since 1947, indoor Motorcycle racing is being promoted by Mr. Bob Barkheimer and Mr. Harold Murrell at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. A crowd of some 3,000 people packed the seats Saturday ni ght to watch a thrilling show of skill and machinery at work. On hand from the Los Angeles area were such stars as Swede Savage and DeWayne Keeter (of the Mantesa Motors Racing Team) also Timbo Harris and Jim Berry, both Honda mounted. From san Luis Obispo came Gene Romero with his super Love BrC/thers Special Triumph. They were to come against the good guYS of Nor-Cal, like Jimmy Odom, the Suzuki kid from Cycle Imports, and his two expert partners Dick Dorrestyn and young Phil Cancilla another one of the Suzuki Gang from Les Edwards Cycle Imports. Also with this year's short track point leader at Vallejo Speedw~, Dick Faria of San Pablo still on that little Mighty Mouse who gave him some trouble at Vallejo none other than Duane Francisco of Walnut Creek, riding a Bultaco. The show climaxed when National Number 18 Mert Lawwill of San Francisco riding for MI. Dud Perkins H-D of San Francisco came from the back to win the 15 lap main event. savage was in there all the way pushing to get Mert but had to settle for a second place. Early in the Main .... On the start Gene Romero and Jimmy Odom battled into the first corner and on the second lap around it was Odom in the lead and Romero ready to make his bid when Jimmy lost the front wbeel. He went down and Romero to hit and landed on him. Both scramble d to get untangled and back on their feet and going again. As Odom passed the front chute we noticed a new competition stripe (and black at that) on his brand new white leathers. But this competition stripe went up his back and over his helmet! So after the race we found out the competition stripe was Romero's tire tread. SACTO MUD SCRAMBLES By Dale McKinnon It was raining so hard and the track so slippery, the Fort Sutter M/C Club decided to cut the mains to four lap events. As messy as the track was, only two or three finished in most cases so that was more than enough laps. The bike s would line up at the start finish line and the starter would step into the starting circle and drop the flag. You would hear a mighty roar and see the bikes headinlt in all directions fish- I I I Say It .~ I IHO. AKA WINS I I I I I I I I I Silli Valley M.C. NELSON GLENDALE, ~ TEL. 243-1017 tailing, broad sliding and falling down, with the starter heading for the nearest tree. The secret to winning seemed to take off slow so the rear wheel wouldn't spin and stick both feet out like outriggers and play it cool. The ones who finished the mains just crawled around the track. It's sure amazing how far a rider will tra vel to race and what kind of weather he will brave to get there just to make a muddy mess of himself and his hike. There were thirteen riders from the Reno, Sparks area as far north as Ukiah and as far south as Santa Cruz. At least half of the riders came from the Bay area, so it goes to show, riders like the way the Fort Sutter Club runs their events and know that they run them rain or shine. Considering the .adverse weather conditions, I think they did an excellent job. The riders as well as the few spectators seemed to enjoy themselves. December 11 was a cold and cloudy day with the threat of rain in the air, as 124 riders stood ready for the Fort Sutter M.C. Club to present another scrambles. The 50's were first to the line, the start was good and they were bunched coming out of the first turn, but before the finish they pretty well spread out and Roy Mascalell won. The first 90 heat saw 97m Barry Love work his way up from the middle of the pack to take the win. Mike Robinson gave him a hard time but had to settle for second. The next heat John Henery was first with Ray Valne runne~ up. Debbie Jackline and Alice Grand lined UP for the Powder Puff. The starter dropped the flag and Debhie was art like a shot with Alice right behind. Alice had a little trouhle with the muddy track and Debbie went on to win. In the 90 Am. event Kenny Roherts got off the line first followed closely by Mike Corcoran and Gary Williams. Kenny dropped it coming out of the first turn and Mike took over the lead with Gary challenging but Mike won with Gary a close second. Rich Effenger won the first novice 200 heat and Harvey Hambling taking the second. Both races were pretty close, it seemed as the race progressed the heats were getting better and more competiti ve. . The 250 novic& event proved to be the best so far because Robert Hausten and another rider were neck and neck until the finish, with Robert just barely getting the nod. L.B. Williams on a Ducati won the second ~5U event. Number one rider Ray Huff won the Ex. 250 event, leading all the way. He rode like he was on a dry track, the mud didn't seem to bother him at all. It ~tarted to rain before the 500' s got to the line, this was just what the doctor ordered to make the track even more slippery. In the first 500 novice heat only half the riders made it through the first turn, so they had to have a restart. A few more made it this time but not enough, so they tried again. They all made it this time but started falling elsewhere. The only other rider the mud didn't seem to bother was Bill Kreeger in the 650 ciass. He took off like shot out of a gun, rode the outside of the track and was in first place from start to finish. I don't think he could have gone much faster if it was dry.
