Touching down after the jumP. tbey los t control and did a few end-ove rs , 'Twa s a little rough on man and ma chine but it gathered many s pe ctators around this area of the track. small bikes provided the morning action. a nd they were spared from tbe rain . Th e IOOcc maln had fi rst go at the track . Keith Mashburn. who has some qui rk a rout running in any position other tban first . snatched the lead and s purred bis Honda to victory . with Bevan s a nd Blake in hot pursuit . M. Lane. aboard a Bridgestone in the 125-200cc class . came from behind to take the lead . and once he had it . there was no getting by. P erry and Kohnhoff, both mounted on Bul ta cos, battled it out behind Lane. Lane held his lead unti l he took tbe flag. with Perry finishing second and Kohnhorr t hird. The 250c c novi c e main was a cl ose' hard fought ra ce. but ""en all was over it was #128. Ca pis t ra no, brough t his Bultaco in for t he win. Palmer, also aboard a Bultaco, held do"D tbe second slot, closely follow ed by Ev ans and Lewi s ; T hree s idehacks were up in the early afternoon . j ust in time for the firs t raindrops. Roe s ch a nd Spinkle on a H-D rig capt ure d t he win. with Krogstie and Lannom holding down second. Burl ey an d Burl ey lost their third whee l when the axle broke i n a left tum. They dumped their machine a nd were unable to finish . The big bores face d the drizzling rain. Th e 500cc novic e maln was tbe only big bike class not using the motocros s sy s tem . Matchless-mounted B. ""0 J. Bassey, followed by K. Mashburn, f oll owed by C. Hackle , make It t o t he Jump. LONG BEACH HONDA Ward showed the way home. Bultaco mounted T. Palmer. in 3rd place . did a good job of wheeling his smaller mount. always a front runner and applyin g pressure to the larger machines he was followin g. All other classes were run in motocross fas hion . In the 250cc amateur moto, M. Griffith on a Duca ti , took the win with J ansich on a Montesa and F orde st on a Yamaha taking second and third respectively. The 250cc expert class was one of the better races of the day. Keith Mashburn, Greeves mounted. displayed his unus ually good riding ability. Mashburn fought it out with Jim Bass ey on a Suzuki. Leading almost all of the way . Mashburn took tbe win with Bas s ey second. The 350cc win went to H. Jackson on a Bultaco, and the big bikes took ove r for the remai nin g part of the day . K. Watkins. #82 . on a T riumph. did lots of sllding to take t he open amateur class, but ta ke it he did . wit h G. Smith also on a T riumph a nd Skip Sayl or on a Kawa saki following him across the finish to ta ke second and thi rd place . The open expert class was hotly contested. Action was fast in the turn s now soft and sandy. making t he ra ce even more e xciti ng. Th e lead s wapped around, but B. Swennin g astride a Triumph pil ed up the most points, with Smi th second and Bonner third, both Triumph riders also. steve scott ran th e first moto on his Bonneville, but after he dropped it. he had to run the remaining two on his Bultaco. He did a good job of hanging onto fifth spot competing witb the larger. more powerful machines . By t he time t he la s t race was over , it was quite co ld. and t he sky was dar k. As t he rain t ric kle d down. the riders trickled a way toward home a nd the action was over at Acton for another day .
