October 31st, weary from fighting the strong winds of the high desert, welcomed the chance to relax in the cool breezes of the Big Pines recreation area near Jackson Lake, 50 miles north of Azusa. Free beer. fruit punch and coffee accompanied the delicious beans that were served the riders by the Whittier Rejects M.e. No games or competition were offered and the riders seemed content to relax, enjoy the smog-free air and converse with fellow cyclists. For those riders who did not attend the Death Valley Tour, the Rejects started their 2nd Annual Bean Run at the LeBard and Underwood shop in La Habra. The route took them Dorth around the San Gabriel Mountains into Palmdale and theD East through Pearblossom and up the mountaiD to Jackson Lake. Riders returning from Death Valley fouDd the sign-iD at the Wrightwood turn-off as they descended the Cajon Pass. They turned west and rode through the mountaiD village of Wrightwood and the Holiday Hill area. then dropped down into the bowl that holds Jackson Lake. When the riders checked in, they were dealt their poker hands and gi veD the opportunity to draw to 3 additional cards. Beer & beans were next in line with unlimited seconds available. The Rejects cracked a second keg and allowed refills on the beer. Shortly after the 3 o'clock deadli'ne. the Rejects shook the ticket box and drew the sweepstakes winDer. Without pausiDg and will little ceremony. they announced the Poker winners and distributed the gold. • CONGRATULATIO S • • • • : p. Highway 39 between the Angeles Crest Highway and Crystal Lake is steep. very narrow and sometimes treacherous. Very few riders shifted. their bikes out of second gear on their way down. Members of the new EI Tigres M.C. stowed to air a motorist who had burned out his brakes on the steep grades and contributed 15 emergeDcy nares while he obtaiDed assistance. The Norwalk Centaurs M.C. with 14 members present won the largest club trophy. Other winners are: Don May. Floyd Bowles and James Lowden; GeDtleman solo. Betty Durfee, passenger. sadie May and Carol WiDgfield. lady solo. Claudia Nold WOD the sweepstakes. I set aboot doing this using a large rock as a hammer. After a-half hour or so. of banging away. I was quite pleased with what I coold see ·at the ligh t of a small bontire I made with the map. My flash light had been lost in the tumble. So I decided to carryon. What I did not know at this time was tbat 30 miles behind me. betweeD Comondu and Pozo Grande. Bob was sitting by the side of the road licking his wouDds. He had. in fact. hit a deep rut. while traveling at over 50 miles per hour. wbich threw him against a boulder and broke his right wrist. in additioD to several scars and bruises. I later learned that after spending several hoors in an attempt to get medical attention. and finding DODe, he decided to carry OD to La Paz. His motCfcycle had suffered very little damage, except for a broken head light and twisted handlebars. The remaining 165 miles to La Paz were quite uneventlul. and I was able to keep up an average speed of around 50 miles per hour all or the way. and I eveDtually reached La Paz at 7 :40 a.m•• October 13. 1966; 49 hours and 40 minutes after leaving Tijuana.
