Bridesmaid Mel Lacher tinally played the role o[ the bride last week and won the I5-lap Expert Final [or the first time this year at Ascot Park. (916) 635-6970 No. of Kern County The Harley-Davidson ace scored a clean sweep, winning the heat race for the fifth time in six weeks and the Trophy Dash for lhe third time. His three-in-a-row in the dash event now ties him with Gene Romero as the only two riders to win three straight trophies this season. Mert First to Fade Lacher had challengers most of lbe way in his bid for lbe win. MertLawwill. who posted lbe lastest beat rece win of lbe night, was lbe first to try Lacher on for size. Mert faded out of lbe picture at lbe end of three laps wilb Chris Draayer and Sammy Tanner closing in. On lap eight it was Romero replacing Tanner for third with Draayer still a solid second. Lap ten found Dan HaallY shoving Romero out of third and setting sail after a be.d s tart off the line. The late laps again found Tanner dropping be.ck and finally ending up in a distant sixth position with Romero holding fourth, Haaby third and Draayer in for second. The closest expert race of the night came in lbe five lap semi where only two riders could transfer to the feature. Romero won a close decision over Pat Gosch, Paul Conserriere and Guy Louis. John Carter again ran second with Randy Say in third. Randy "Tireless" Say lost the tire orf the rear wbeel in the beat race and came in for last place in the semi to "in lbe event and again go to the main event and cbop lbe point lead held by Ron Kruseman. Roo was a distant fourlh in the final this week. Pruett Persists Tuck and go Larry Pruett waged a ding-dcng battle with Mike Morton for the novice main event win. The lead changed hands five times between the Yamaha and Suzuki riders before Pruett wrapped up his second straight main event win. Earlier, both riders had won their respective heat races with Morton's time three seconds faster than that of Pruett. Again it was a bad night for the top rour Ascot experts as all four went down to defeat in the rour white plate five-lap events. Lacher upset Tanner, Chuck Jones took the measure or Ralph White in a close one. Mert Lawwill stopped Dan HaallY who went into the race with four straight heat wins and Draayer upset Gene Romero.
