DIll I.2JJ) 35iH21l THURSDAY night, October 27th. saw the short track championship decided at South Gate with some of the top name riders in ACA dirt tracking fighting for the top. Paul Wilde was outstanding in both the 50cc main and the lOOcc classes. He went home with the greatest share of the gold. Paul has just built a brand new . JAP-type fmme for his lOOcc Yamaha. It looks as if this -is the ans wer for SOuth Gate. The machine seemed to handle better and accelerated quicker out of the corners than the rest of the equipment. Rick Woods returned after being awa,y for a month with a broken collarbone and captured the 250cc trophy dash. In the 250cc B Main. a new rider just up from Peru and riding his second flat track event in the United States. Coco Campbell on a Honda, was the winner, followed by Jim Connolly. Connolly led the B Main for the first three laps and Coco had been running in fifth spot but worked his wa,y through the pack to take the win. The last event at SOuth Gate was a little disappointing. For some reason. the water truck mysteriously disappeared and the dust cloud could be seen for several miles. At first, it was thought the event would have to be called because of the danger of the riders not being able to see _ each other, but after the practice session. most of the loose dust had" been blown away, the course developed a cushion and the dust was very light.
