Near Nipton, California 52 miles
south of Las Vegas, at the Bailey Rd.
offramp, there is a small mining communit;y called Mountain Pass. Not much
bigger than a trailer park, this community has a couple of very unusual
things going for it. The Molybdenum
Corp. of America have here the only
rare earth metal mine of its kind in the
world-and the Hill & Gully Riders M.C.
have the only scrambles track of its
kind in the world.
ance on the track and rode to a 5th
place finish. And Al just got over a
hospital t;ype illness 10 days ago!
Mike Whittington rode his first race
on a Honda push rod 90 and after a spill
or two managed a 3rd place finish in
the 100cc Jr. class. Bultaco rider Chuck
Hatcher won his first 1st place trophy
taking the 250 Novice main event.
Las Vegas' favorite starter Gene
Drew waved off the 100 Jr. class. Hard
riding Robert E. Lee, came south on his
Suzuki 50 and rode to the victory. Maybe
if novice rider Mike Wittington's battery
hadn't failed while he was leading the
3rd heat, Robert E. might have wound
most of the time, like he was completely
out of control, rot no denYing his riding
ability. He clung to the bike and track
throughout the heats and main and linished with a good lead ahead of Expert
Terry Grie ble (Bultaco). Third place to
Dan Harnett.

Mike Chadburn, who rides about on
the cleanest looking Triumph in these
parts, look all 3 heats in the open class.
Dutch Cunningham in the 2nd heat
joined a game of real bare and hounds.
During the 2nd heat a dog chased a
rabbit across the path of the oncoming
cycles. Unable to avoid it, Dutch's
cycle entered the chase with disasterous
results to tbe dog. The hare got away
clean but "endsville" for the hound.

The Hill & GuIly track is well named.
Last week's scrambles was a blast from
the spectators view, and a rough go for
the riders. It was a track that called for
cool riding and fast thinking.
A big thanks goes to Mr, B.D. Bailey,
Manager of the mine, who gave the club
use of tbe land to build the track, lent
equipment and saw to it that an ambulance was in attendance. I was told that
lacking a few of tbe necessary tools,
club members manicured the track SUI'"
face with brooms, shovels (and mucho
elbow grease) to prepare for the races.
It was a day marked by a number of
interesting sidelights: Vegas Yamaha
dealer Al Titus made his first appeal'"
above bears aut.
