South Gate Raceway llr/20/66
Last Thurdaay night the fans witnessed one of the hairiest and wildest short
track nights at South Gate Raceway this
season. Competition was so close, and
the riders are becoming so evenlY matched, that it is now very difficult for
six competitors to get throu gh a 36 ft.
corner all together, but they were trying.
ConseQuently, any bobble would result in
riders going down, and they did just
that!
Very fortunately, there were no serious injuries, and most of the riders were
able to return and compete if their eQuipment wasn't bent. The worst damage of
the evening happened to Carl Sjolund in
the semi-main event when he fell and sustained a cut over his right eyebrow which
took a couple of stitches to close.
Gary Calkins got back into form in
the heat ;ace and won his event which
moved him into the trophy dash, and for
the first time in many months, Gary came
out on toP. winning the 100cc trophy.
He didn't have Cjuite the same luck in
the 100cc main and finished third behind
second place man Russ Robinson, the
100cc champion for 1967. Russ was unable to set Qy Paul Wilde and his new
100cc Yamaha with a JAP-type frame.
Wilde repeated his 100cc performance
by winnin g the 50cc main event. In 2nd
place and pushing Paul through the entire event was last year's 50cc champion.
Dave Smith. These two will be getting
together this Thursday night for the
South Gate championship and it looks
like there will be a Battle Royal in both
the 50cc and the 100cc classes.
The 250cc trophy dash went to Keith
Mashburn on one of Mr. Nicholson's new
Greeves with the telescopic forks. Keith
was able to repeat his performance and
win the 250cc main event also. Second
place went to Lee Stumpenhaus also
Greeves mounted. Lee's new "secret
weapon" didn't work out too well Thursday night and he was forced to stay
back in second place spot. In third. and
a new man to So. California short track
racing, was Coco Campbell from Peru.
Coco was mounted on Randy Layne's
Honda and seemed to have no difficulty
wheeling the large machine around the
short course. Fourth "pot went to Arvil
Sparks on a Dot. Arvll had been a front
contender earlier in the 15 lap event.
bu t had some trou ble on on e of the corners. went wide and was never a ble to
regain his front-running position. Arvil
was competing on one of tbe Dots whicb
is being imported by Jack Van Wyck.
After the event talking to Lee Stumpen-
