It looks as though one of my fellow
columnists, Mr. Roxy Rockwood. has
baited his readers with a surprise annoucement concerning NASCAR. As
most of you know, Mr. Lyn Kucher, the
former head of the A.M.A., resigned to
go to work for NASCAR. Could it be
that Mr. Rockwood is hinting about the
possibilil;y of NASCAR taking over professional motorcycle racing in the
United states? I'm sure most of the
readers who have followed the political
involvement with the AMA concerning
the riders and other associations are
pretl;y much aware that there is a possibility that NASCAR could get involved
in professional motorcycle racing. Ours
is the onlY wheeled racing sport in which
they are not in volved at the present
time. NASCAR sanctions every type of
four-wheeled motor racing, and now they
are also becoming interested in drag
racing. With the acquisition of Mr. Kuchler, it is only natural that they would be
looking toward motorcycling as another
division of NASCAR. Of course, this
would relieve AMA of one of their bi~
gest problems - professional racing.
There are many interesting avenues that
the imaginative mind might pursue in
this particular area; the AMA becoming
a service organization, the AMA adopting strictly an amateur position, or the
possibilil;y of the AMA, with the backing of Harley-Davidson, completely givin g up compe tition ridin g in all of it s
facets and exerting its energies in the
safety area of motorcycling, letting
NASCAR take over the giant operation
of promoting, governing and controlling
professional motorcycling in the United
states. At least, if there are any ill
feelings by the professional riders toward the AMA and HarleY'"Davidson,
this would be eliminated hy the NASCAR
take-over.
I'm glad to see that District 37 carries enough weight and has made enough
noise for the "wheeis" in Columbus to
want to discuss some of the problems
the California racers, or at least the
riders in District 37, have. I think it
was a very smart move on Mr. Berry's
part to in vite the Dis t. 37 of,flcers to
Columbus. At least it looks as if the
feelings of the riders In this area will
be heard; let's hope it's not just a
watered-down show of interest to pacify
the locals.

optometry pl'01essor, in a
drive for tmlfic safety,
says he deplores the popularity of red for sports
cars, cycles and clothing.
"Red Is poorly seen,"
said Dr. Merrill Allen, an
expert on motorists' vision
problems.
"Red is hard to distinguish through tinted windshields and by certain
color-defective drivers even
with clear windshields, and
by drivers wearing green
sunglasses," he said.
..All pedestrians, cycles
and sma Il-c a r drivers
should show as much white
as possible. White makes
them appear larger and
more conspicuous."
