Pbotos IlY Deanis Greene • By ScoU Eastburn ~ Once again San Gabriel Valley Raceway hosted some very exciting motorcycle action. This is a very fast track, but it's slippery as well. Two of tbe novice heats were restarted when three of th e riders found their way into the infield on turn one, a tricky turn that was very important to the final outcome of the races. The ground leading out of this turn was plowed up and caused many riders to run off the narrow backstretch. Montesa-mounted Phil Todd was the big novice money winner with Dan Reed chasing him all the wayan his Enfield. Joe Roseberry and his very fast Benelli dropped two places from last week as he finished third. Point leader John Spmgue was put out of contention when he spun out on the sharp tum leading in to the backstretch. The yellow-plate division saw Jim Berry lead from wire to wire. Rich Thorwaldson and Gary Bailey couldn't decide who would take the second spot. It appeared as though ThorwaJdson had it until his engine faltered and Bailey left him. Even though he was running with mechanical troubles he managed to hold onto fourth, only letting Ron Kruseman get by him. • . There was no time to lock the hike up, put it in a skid or lay it down as Jim was very capable of doing from his experience around the racing scene. Jim's Bonneville crashed heavily into the car. He flew over the top and fell to the pavement with the bike landing on top of him. Needless to say Jim died from his injuries. The woman driving the death-ear said she had seen the rider before turning in front of him and so her insurance may eventually try to compensate Jim's pregnant widow Jane and their two children. i~~Nonda C-z ~. Jim carried no life insurance. A collection for the benefit of the Winebarger family has been begun by racer Bruce Holland, for whom Jim pitted for three years at Ascot. We at Cycle News feel that all our readers will be touched by tbe plight of the family and would want to send a dollar or two, which would certainly helP out. This didn't deter him at all and on Sunday (we hope our info is correct) he won two motos and was leading the third when he dr0pped it, but steadily worked his way back up through the pack again. But ask Bultaco-riders such as Carl Patrick about the great support he gets from Distributor Doug Yerkes who rides in the same class as Pat does. Or watch Kim Kimball on a Montesa at Ascot. In closing, just one thing, we would suggest that for riders planning to ride next Sunday at Prado, they acquire a set of tires with spikes on them such as used for ice racing. That's what the groove resembles, men. And we've never heard so many complaints about the condition of the track as we did Sunday. For a track designed for a high-speed professional t;ype circuit, it is getting downright DANGEROUS. That's a quote not from a loser, but from a rider who is a consistant winner in the big-bore classes.
