IbfIY are staccered. ... slow a.. at CUll 2 On SUDday. bright skies saw the ACA short trackers finisb their season VENTURA FAIRGROUNDS 10/16/66 lit the V_um track. Tbe track is being converted into a TI' course and the remaining four scheduled events for 1966 will be TT. The short track will be rebuilt and back in action in spring of 1967. with a full race program scheduled on a weekly basis. This final event proved to be one of the most exciting lit the Ventura track. with sliding Steve SCott winning the 250cc trophy dash on a Bultaco and Russ Robinson capturing the 100cc trophy dash on his Yamaha. Later on in tbe semi-main. Russ blew his engine which was very disappointing to tbe fans because a grellt duel had developed earlier in the hellt events between Steve SCott. Gary Calkins and Russ Robinson. Paul Wilde won the 50cc class on his Yamaha and Dave Smith finished second on his Tohlltsu. A local boy. Jere Robinson from Oxnard on a Honda finished third. but not witbout some problems from fourtb place finisber Randy Layne on a Honda. . The most exciting event of tbe day was the 250cc maiD event. It took three starts to get it under way. On the first start. #121 Ron Kruseman from Ventura on a Triumpb broke out into the lead. Norm Elledge on a Bultaco passed Ron in Tum 2 and the macbines became entangled. Ron's right foot was dragged into the back wbeel and became lodged between tbe wbeel and tbe upright bar on the frame. Witb Ron's foot lIttacbed to the machine. Nann Elledge fell against tbe outside fence. Botb riders and machines were stalled on th e track and the evellt was immedilltelY stopped. After removing the upright bar on tbe frame. Ron's foot was easily dislodged. Ron was not iI\.iured was able to walk on his foot and expressed tbe desire to get back in tbe main event wben it was restarted. On tbe next start. everyone came all' the line togetber and cbarged into Turn 1. Dan KellY got involved witb several riders and was flipped bigb in tbe 'air. witb his macbine landing across tbe track and Dan lYing on the otber portion blocking the passage of any bikes coming around. This caused tbe main event to be stopped and another start was needed. Dan was not burt, merelY shaken up a bit and moved back on the starting line. In tbe meantime, Ron Kruseman. taking a cool-off lap. did a wbeelie on the back straightaway and the macbine came clear back over on top of him. tbis time injuring his left foot. After examination of bis foot by the ambulance drivers. Ron was not permitted to restart. His foot bad been badlY bruised. but did not appear to be broken. So. on tbe third and final start. tbe lineup was Steve SCott. Mike Spitzer. Dan Kelly. Russ Robinson and Norm Elledge. At tbe start. Steve SCott broke away on bis Bultaco and led tbe first several laps. with Mike Spitzer in bot pursuit. followed by Norm Elledge. Russ Robinson and Dan KellY. On tbe fifth lap. coming out of Tum 2. Dan KellY fell but QuicklY recovered. In tbe meantime. Mike Spitzer on bis Honda was pressing Steve SCott. By tbe tbreeQuarter point in the twelve-lap event. Mike bad passed Steve and Dan Kelly bad overtaken Norm Elledge and was pressing Russ Robinson for tbe third spot. SCott and Spitzer were baving a tremendous duel. changing positions once or twice in eacb lap. Dan KellY was able to get by Russ Robinson and finisbed third over-all. Over tbe screaming of tbe crowd. you could bear the announcer's voice sllJing Mike Spitzer bad just barelY sQueezed by Steve SCott to win the main event. witb Steve taking second.
