Touring
ith The Eagles
By John Shedd
A brisk Sunday morning met over
280 Southern California road riders, as
they left their homes heading for Norm
Reeves Store in Lakewood to enter the
California Eagles' poker mn. The riders
gathered between 8 and 9 a.m. and were
greeted with the usual coffee and donuts. A major factor which set this run
apart, from others this year, was obvious
from the start. There was a tremendous
number of small bikes. This might in
fact be a turning point, with HarleyDavidson no longer being king of the
road runs, as their number was nearly
eljualed by the massive turnout of small
machines. Turning point or not, when
the California Eagles advertised any
size bike welcome, and no freeway
driving, they got ljuite a response.
Shortly after 8 a.m., riders began to
trickle away from the sign-in traveling
north on Lakewood Blvd. The 70 mile
route passed the Whittier Narrows Dam
Recreation Area and the San Bernardino
Freeway before turning light on Las
Tunas. It was only a short jaunt after
the first tum to the first check point.
The second instruction sheet led the.
riders left on Highway 39, then right on
Foothill Blvd., and then right again on
White Avel past the Los Angeles Count;y
Fair Grounds. The second check point
was on the corner of White Ave. and
Filth Street where the riders turned for
a pleasant drive throogh Brea Canyon
and the first stretch of the run that was
not on a four lane street.
