Back at Tulare By Annette Camp This year's half-mile at Tulare. California marked some definite changes from last year's race there. The majority of these were safety improvements. This was the sixth annual running of Tulare, put on by the Visalia Ramblers Motorcycle Club. Noticeable improvements were bales of hay lined up against the outside fence all the way through the turns. Also the relieving of about "ix inches of dirt from the inside of the race track to give it a better bank. The track itself was in beautiful condition for racing. There were no really big changes in the lighting. The best lights are still in the infield. According to club President Carvin Brown some new lights were put up and some old ones were redirected. The lighting still needs some improvement. Other changes included a stand-by ambulance and notifying the local hospital so they could be prepared for any accidents coming in from the track. This year we are happy to report there were none. The evening's race program was well organized, run off smoothly and with no delays by the club members. Many of the riders were distressed at the way the race program was set up. It was no fault of the Visalia Ramblers as they have no control over the program. This is left up to the referee. Waves of complaints came at the rider meeting from several top riders, mainly concerning the running of the Amateurs and Experts together when there were more than enough riders to make a good, fast program. In the Expert category there were eighteen entries, including names like Gary Nixon, Neal Keen. Dick Mann, Joe Messaros the Ohio Ace, Phil Hawk, Sid Carlson, Sam Satterly, Ed Wirth and so on. The Visalia Ramblers and the Fair officials are to be congratulated for the many improvements they worked so hard to make. Tulare is still the best track in the west for stylish sliding.
