SIIORT TRACK SCENE (ClntinuH) . - MORE PIX ON PAGE SIX Rleht, RuSi Robinson collects hi s South Gatl dash reward whlll Ivan OdIn looks on admlrlnaly Trophy alrl Is from Llltll Annll Wannll's In Gardena. • ORANGE COUNTY SPEEDWAY Wednesday night at Orange County saw the last event of the season for night short track racing. The championship event will be held on a Sunday afternoon and will be announced in the near future . The 250cc trophy dash and main event winner was Ivan Oden on his Honda. Ivan has enjoyed twent;y-two consecutive wins at Orange Count;y and has dominated the 250cc class over the last month and a half. Challenging Ivan in the 250cc main was Sal Acosta on a Bultaco. sal tried several times to pass Ivan on the inside and on the outside, but justwasn't able to get by the big Honda. In tbird place and first time out this year on a 250cc machine, was Russ Robinson on a Bultaco. Russ is presently the high point mainin the 100cc class and looked very ill\Pressive on the 250 Bultaco. Fourth place went to sliding Mike Spitzer on his Harley-Davidson Sprint. Johnny Balaam finished in sixth spot after a hard crash in the third lap when his left leg was wrenched severely at the knee. We're happy to note that the hospital report stated there was no serious injury to Johnny'S knee, other than a • .. , severe sprain. The 100cc trophy dash and main event wentto Russ Rohinson on a Yamaha. second place in the 100cc main went to Mart;y Endless on a Honda. Marty is becoming a real challenger. At one time in the first two laps he led the 100cc main. In hot pursuit of Mar.ty was Eddie McGregor who finished third over-all. Fourth spot went to Johnny Balaam on a new 100cc Twin Yamaha. • .. SOUTH GATE RACEWAY It looked as though South Gate 'was going to be a repeat of the previous night, with Ivan Oden winning both the 250cc trophy dash and main event, and Russ Robinson capturing the lOOcc trophy dash. But Russ was not as fortunate in the 100cc main and had to finish behind Dan Kelly on his supe rbly running 100cc Honda. Ivan didn't have it quite as easy on Thursday. Pushing him was Mike Tillman also on a Honda and right behind Mike on another Honda ~as Chuck saxton. In pursuit of Chuck came Mike Spitzer on his Harley-Davidson Sprint and in fifth spot was Michael Dwyer on a BSA. The event had to be called in the fourth lap because Johnny Balaam again went down on that left leg. This time he was able to walk away from the fall, but because of the way the machine fell and the position John was in, the track was unsafe for racing and the event was stopped and re-started. In the 100cc main, first off the line was Dan Kelly. Following Dan was Marty Endless and Paul Wilde, and then Russ Robinson, with the other riders in the rear. Marty and Paul battled for the first three laps for second position, with Russ holding back in fourth. On the fifth lap, Russ was able to get by Paul for third spot. With only two laps to go, Russ fInally squeezed by Marty Endless and pulled into second place. With only two laps left and Dan Ke lly pulling steadily away, Russ was not able to close the gap. The 50cc main event went to the new 50cc points leader, Paul Wilde on a Tohatsu. Paul moved out in front at the start. a.nd held the position through the remaImng eIght laps. In hot pursuit was last year's champion and now second in point standing, Dave Smith. Dave just didn't quite have enough horsepressure to get by Paul.
