Photos & Report by John Ramos The Livermore Motorcycle Club, a road riding organization, pre>mated the Sportsman $hart Track event at the Altamonl Speedway on Sunday, September 4th. Thi s was the first allempt at race promotion by thl s eroup and the twenty-eight members did a right good job. With but one week's notice, over ninety riders showed up to do battie on the Altamont fifth-mile ovaL Nearly 1,000 fans packed the stands for the show and were favored with shirt-sleeve weather for the night's racing. Stinky, Boss & Moss The Action got off to a fast start with the 90cc hombs. In the second main event of the evening, l6-year-old Bill (Stinky) sargenti powered his Hodaka to a convincing wire-ta-wire win in the 90cc Amateur go ahead of Luis Boss and Arnold Moss aboard a Honda and Bridgestone. Going up a couple of steps in classifications- Duane Francisco won the combined 90cc Expert!125cc Novice and Expert race. Duane, who is spon- SpfJrtsmen in IIlftl/1JfJnf Ovtll sored by Cycle City of Walnut Creek, came off the line last but worked his way up to the third slot by the end of the first lap and moved into second place on the fourth. Three laps later, Duane powered his way past 90cc Expert Lucky Tretheway and held the lead. The last race of the night was the 250cc Expert go'round. From the start, Duane Francisco took the lead with Bob Self right behlnd. As the pack roared off from the start. Roger Goldthwaite was bumped by another rider down to sixth going into the first turn but had moved up to second by the end of the first lap. Bultaco-mounted Don Stover moved up to third at this time dropping Self to the number four spot. Self and stover fought it out for three laps when Bob managed to get back into third and stay there for the finish three laps later. As the flag fell on the night's last race. the order was Duane Francisco (Bultaco), Roger Goldthwaite (Bultaco), Bob Self (Bultaco) and Don Stover (Ducati). Altamont Speedway is located just off Highway 50 eight miles west of the town of Tracy. The track features a half-mile paved oval, a one-fourth mile paved oval and a one-fifth mile dirt oval and is reportedly the fastest half-mile track in the country. ..................
