IT WAS GREAT AT GRAHAM By Vic Ebbutt National TT Champion Emile Ahola, captured the annual Graham Speedway Expert Cu..ionship, Friday, September 2, before 3,800 wildly cbeering race fans at Graham, Wasbington. Pushed bard lIy T. Gouge of seattle, In a TriJlllpb and 8UI Gellenbeck, If Tacoma, aboard a Harley-Davidsol, beavily-favored Ahola nevertheless maintailtd colml of tbe event hili starting flag to finisb. It was rather a comeback for Ahola after placing fifth in the Expert Main with loss of his mag pickup in the second lap of the race. Exceptional riding ability enabled him to place fifth after riding the complete distance with one cylinder. Larry Garbe of Vancouver, B.C., on his Triumph won the Expert Main and Tom Gouge placed second. Davidson. Third place was taken by Chuc k Winders. of Olympia. who was riding a Triumph. Wray All Tbe Way A close race gave Top Novice honors to Dan Holton, from Sumner, Wash. on a Honda, who was followed at a distance of approximately 8 inches by Lloyd Wray.also of Sumner, aboard his Bultaco. In third place. right on Wray's rear wheel was Tacoman Dave Grout, also on a Bultaco. A heart-stopping crash in the first turn marred the start of the first Expert heat run by the eight fastest men. "Gentleman Hal" Parks, and Dick Hackett, the riders involved, were not injured. It is virtually impossible to say what caused this particular spill but many riders feel that there is too much sandy loam in the surface compared to the percentage of clay. Members of the Blue Barons have assured me that prior to next year's weekly race schedule the track will be in top shape. This was the final race of the season. Continued success in 1967 is indicated for the B I u e Barons Motorcycle Club. The average at. tendance this season has been nearIy 3800 per race and the average number of riders was 83 which attests to the popularity of this track and its races.
