• Davidson sprint. In last spot and bavlng all kinds of troubles and difficulties Wednesday night was Rick Woods. The 50cc Main Evert went to Randy Layne on his Honda. Randy was able to do a little better job Wednesday night on his 50cc than he did in the 100cc event. THE FINISH UNE BY' BOXY BOCKWooD • • • • The ·BSA wrecking crew·, early favorites to make a shambles of ihe annual 8-mile National at Ascot this comIng Saturday, may find things ihe other way around. Sammy Tanner, Ralph White and Dan HubY are all re-united for the annual event that has been won the last six years in a row by BSA riders. Namely Tanner, Gunter and Keen. H-D and Triumph have made strong bids, in fact, Tanner aboard a Triumph, won the first 8-mile back in 1959. The crew bas had opposition early in the season from Mert Lawwill and Chris Draayer and of late by Gene Romero. Mert won one main event and Ii dash while Draayer ran it right down to the wire the last night he was here and just missed winning both the dash and finaL Lawwill, and Draayer will be joined by Bart Markel and new ace, Fred Nix to give H-D another formidable crew to challenge the BSA boys. Triumph has Rome ro and a possi ble assist from Gary Nixon. who is hotter than a firecracker in national events this year. Pre-race predictions do not favor Markel or Nixon to win the Ascot event but close battle is taking place between these two riders for the number one and the Grand National title. The Ascot points are all important with only three nationals remaining and Nixon is a heavy favorite to beat Markel next weekend at the Carlsbad road races, Both have won the Sacramento mile National once and they are a tos:rup in that one, so the Ascot race is a must for Markel if he is to capture his third Grand National Championship. Bart bas tried to win the Ascot event many limes but has always been turned back. It's hard to believe but Bart is riding betler than ever this year. I watched bim many Urnes while in the midwest last month and find it difficult not to believe that this may be the year at Ascot for the Oyer from Flint. In Draayer and Romero we have two first year Experts who could win the Ascot race. Occasionally in the past one first timer, but never two, have been given an outside chance. These two young tigers could run one-two and not surprise some of the watchers that have been following their climb to the toP. Draayer bas had a great season on the National circuit and bad it gone the other way in the mechanical department ~.\ ,ITCHLE55 • HODAKA ~ SALES· PARTS· SERVICE EDDIE CROWELL 10427 Prairie. Carl has been riding for several years in Northern California at Three star in Sacramento, but with the closing of the course, the Northern California riders haven't had an opportunity to race in several months and as Carl said, "The riders in Northern California are pretty starved for some short track racing so 1 ihought I would come down for the Wednesday and Thursday night everts.· BY watching Carl. ride, many SHORT TRACK SCENE a few times he would have been right on Markel's rear wheel for the number one plate next year. If yOU want a real outside shot then go with Nix, the new Harley ace. who can ride any and all half-miles fast enough to win. He has an uncanny ability to adopt to any track, don't sell him short as he makes his second appea~ ance at Ascot this Saturday night. Tamer of course, is the favorite. SaDmy always gears bigh for the Ascot National and if the boys lel him jump out in [ronl and huil d an early 1ea~ then it wiU be all over and sammy will bave won tbe big one for the fourth time in eigbt tries, RalPh White will again assume the roll of spoiler and can win anytime the track bas good low-groove traction. Haaby had nothing but hard luck on the eastern swing and may still carry the bugaboo into the National. He has run hot and cold all !;eason at Ascot and the wind can blow either way again Saturday night. Tanner, While, Raaby, Marllel, Nixon, Lawwill, Draayer, Romero and Nix, just a few of the stars thal will be gunning for the most sougbl-afler 'half-mile national title in AMA racing books. The talent will all be at Ascot for at least three weeks. All will be back again next Friday, before heading down to carisbad for the National road races where Cal Rayborn gets a shot at the limelight and the Harley-Davidson and Yamaha factory lightweight racing teams meet for the last time this year. The following Friday night the oval aces will again be al Ascot before heading to Sacramento and the final National of the year on lhe one-mile dirt track that bas produced a different winner in each of the seven years the race has been nID. I f you like racing and enjoy watching all the. best in the profession competing in three very different types of national events, then save the coins and take all three of them in. The last road race at Des Moines and the two duels between Nixon and Rayborn would equal anything you have ever seen on the dirt. No reason to think they will not run a repeat at Carlsbad as both will be on the same machines they rode in Iowa. Taking a chance on earlY prediction , let's go with Tanner again in the Ascot ational, Rayborn al Cadsbad and Lawwill to become the first to win two at Sacrameato. It looks good on paper but so did HiUer's plans to conquer the world. Ascot National time trials will again be held this Friday night with a full show of novice half mile racing. This is the only time this year that the amateur and expert riders will race the clock for starting positions. SOme experts have forgotten how, and the amateurs have never tried it-it should be interesting as the eastern riders race the clock every time out on their home grounds. Also look for a large invasion by fans from the midwest and east. We talked with many who are coming out for the final three and the CYcle Trade Show at Disneyland . Enter today. Russ has been absent for three weeks on vacation, but the time away from Orange County didn't seem to bother him or his excellent riding style. Russ was able to capture both the IOOcc Trophy Dash and Main Event. Rick Woods was hardpressed in the IOOcc Main by Keith Mashburn, but finished second to Russ with Keith taking 3rd place, and 4th place going to Carl Cranke, a rider who came down from Orangevale in Northern California. Marty Endless came in next, and Randy Layne followed on his Gilera. The reason that Randy wasn't so handy was that he had englne trouble. The 250cc Trophy Dash and Main Evert went to one of the old timers in flattracking and the current #2 man in the 250cc flattrack championship point standing, Ivan Oden. This will make Ivan's 16th 'consecutive win with his hustling Honda at Orange County which makes him the man to beat at this trac k. In ihe #2 s lot was Keith Mashburn on his Montesa, and third to Sal Acosta on his Bultaco. Sal had led the event in the early laps but had some difficulty coming out of Turn 2 and went a little too broad, allowing Ivan and Keith to slip by. Fourth place went to Bob Graner from San Clemente on his Honda and 5th to Eddie McGregor on his Harley· RACING CASTOR and SUPER FILM this coupon, or any reasonable lacslmlle, Na. . of our riders picked UP pointers front thi s· hard-charging young man from N o~ thern California. We hope carl can get hack down for some more of our events in Southern california this year. He made an outstanding figure in his black and red leathers and his matching black and red Bultaco. Third place in the· A" main wert to Ivan Oden on his Honda. Ivan was having a little difficulty at SOuth Gate coming out of the corners. The big powerful Honda just didn't seem to be getting the traction. Randy Layne finished 4th on a Honda. Randy, almost always a slow starte r in the 250cc events, didn't seem to have enough time to make UP the distance on the first three hard-charging leaders. Firth place went to Nonn Elledge on his Bultaco and in last spot was Keith Mashburn on his Montesa. Keith was plagued with all kinds of handling and engine troubles througbout the entire evening. The"B· Main Event went to DeWayne Keeter on his Montesa. In hot pursuit was Mike Spitzer onhis Harley-Davidson Sprint. Mike had to come all the way up from last spot in the remaining few laps of the event in order to challenge DeWayne. Third place went to Scott Gerhardt and 4th to Michael Dwyer on his BSA. Firth place went to Carl Sjolund on a Monlesa and bringing up las t spot was Johnny. Balaarn on his Yamaha. Johnny broke an expansion chamber but continued to participate in the event (Continued on page 21) " Answer In 2S words or less. S..d with 15th.
