By Chuck Clayton VOICE of CALIFORNIA According to the results, the average age was 27 years old with an average yearly income of $13,400.00. I was amazed at this figure as tbe national average income is somewhere around $5,000. Your readers must all be very wealthy as I checked the scales of the trades in Callf. and they seem to run between $3.00 & $6.00 per hour. Tbe figure your poll shows would indicate that the 27year-old rider is making around $7.00 per hour. This to me is wonderful, as most of tbe cycle riders I know don't seem to be making this kind of money. I gues s I'm just travellng around with the wrong crowd. As an old cycle rider witb a fair education, could you please let me know where I can get in on this kind of income? CLIFF DENTON You might try the Help Wanted ads in Cycle News. Breaking Them Up 00 .. .8 e: ~ :fr '" some of tbe riders at Elsinore bave complained about track conditions, but nothing bas been done so I'll speak for a 11 the riders. The riders can take the cbuck boles, tbe two foot drop and even tbe sboot tbe moon jump, whicb is a ball, but can tbe bikes? I bave talked witb numerous other riders wbo have returned from tbese with broken frames, wheels, seats, and spokes. we like to ride the track, but bave a heart for the independent rider tbat bas to sbell out bis hard earned money for the costl,y repaiIs. Here are a couple of suggestions: smooth out the back stretch and lower the drolroff a little. Do a little research on tbe jump and you will have a fine, fun track that the riders can both enjoy and afford to use. Ask some of the other riders for their opinions. Don't blow a good thing. Being rather new to motorcycle racing, it is our best source of news. On Aug. 21st, a group of riders from Las Vegas motored to SOutbern Calif. to do a wee bit of racing - ending our tour at Perris Park. Please don't misunderstand, we enjoyed the race tboroughl, ybut never have I seen a race so badl,y conducted. small children not only on the track, but rigbt on the edge while 250cc bikes roared around. Otber persons not participating were riding hikes on the edge of the track while the race was in progress I It would onl,y take one serious accident during a race, of a non-participating person and all everyone bas worked for to better motorcycling would be down the drain. so please, do Inform someone - we love our new-found sport and want to do everything possible to improve its image in tbe mind of tbe average person• PEGGY FERGUSON Las Vegas. Startles 8ig Sir ... - :5 I- • A 16-year-old Colton youth was killed yesterday and two persons died Friday night in two separate traffic accidents on san Bernardino County rOll.ds. "Dead are: (We'U sldt! the others) "Booald L. Burris. 16. 11884 Beme Canyon Road, Colton "Burris died instantly in a moto!"' cycle accident at 2:45 p.m. in the Grand Terrace area ... "Tbe mishap occurred on a dirt road north of Oriole st. at the Eas t end of Deberry st. Burris rode bis cycle into a log chain which was stretched between two trees. His neck was broken by the impact. propert,y owners had put up the chain to prevent cyclists from using the dirt path," The bold face is ours. Tbe property owners names were not given, but Cycle News is undertaking an investigation to find out wbo is responsible for this cruel act of entrapment and bave tbem charged with willful and malicious manslaughter. Reader N. Erington. who called this tragedy to our attention asked, "Shouldn't tbis be in the crime section instead of the accident section of the newspaper?" It appears, Mr. Erington, tbat tbe newspapers and authOrities in some parts of California may not be aware that motorcycle riders are not nuisances to be killed off like unwanted pigeons. I believe. bowever, tbat it is still against the law to erect a man-trap in California. I am certain that even the most evil-minded anti motorcycle fanatic who stretcbes a cbain across acycle trail to rid his estate of unwelcome machines must realize tbat be will kill or maim the person riding the machine in the process. Neck-higb chains. ropes or barbed wire (I have encountered tbem all in my riding) cannot be excused as mere barricades. They are not designed to keep out trespassers but to kill them! Murder by mdirect means. what else can you call it? We feel tbat an example needs to be made of the culprits responsible for Ronald Burris' tragic deatb at 16. As outraged citizens we sball demand that our lives be protected by the forced and lawful removal, if necessary, of all such similar mantraps in the west. The passale of the recent trail posting law is protection enougb for the rights of property owners. It is bigh time tbat somebody started legislatin g some protection for motorcycle riders' lives. Or shall young Ronald Burris' death ha ve been as vain and meaningless as a "traUic accident?.. .a m.. . .. -. •• •• .: ~ •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••m ••• •• W•••• ~ •••••••••• !• •
