: Championship Warm-up at Champion a.. ... '" E '" '" 00 .Q By Pattie Prestidge - (Results on page 16) Q, CJ) It's obvious from the caliber of racing seen at Champion peedway August 28, that the riders know a hi g race is coming up. On October 1st and 2nd riders will gather from near and far to do battle for a share of the $3,400 offered on that date. In this, the last TT on this track until the big one, you would have thought that the riders were going for that prize now! • The Expert Main was taken by Davy Bostrom (National number 23) with young Phil Cancilla and Joey Plain in the place and show spots. Fourth place was taken by Rick Faria with Jimmy Plain (Joey's brother) in fifth, Bill stockhamin sixth and Dave Faria (Rich's brother) in seventh. Third place man Joey Plain is the older brother of Jimmy Plain who is quite well known in Northern California for his winning ways. Brother Joey is fresh {rom a one-year-Iay-off and his finish in this, his first race on the come-back trail, was a hig surprise for all the fans 'and riders in the area. Dave Faria, wh" finished seventh, is the brother of Rick Faria and this too was a surprise finish because it was the first race of the season for Dave. These two sets of brothers ran in a special race along with Davy and Pan! Bostrom. After the dust had settled hom this family affair, Paul Bostrom (the younger) was the number one man with his brother second. Third and fourth spots were taken by Joey and Jimmy Plain, Rich and Dave Faria were fifth and sixth. Wall 'till next timethe "family honor" is at stake in these races. The Amateur final was the scene of a hattie royal with first place changing twice and second position being held by four different riders. After the flag fell, tbe order was Fred McClelland, George Spai 11 and Gary Clark. Earlier in the race, Spain bad been holding first but McClelland came up to take it away. Clark had. at one time in the race, a bold on the number two slot but be mis-judged over the jump and put his front wheel through the fence. wh'i1e he was getting out of the trap and restarting, George Spain passed him and Clark had to settle for third. The Novice go 'round put a familiar face in the winner's circle when young Jimmy Odam took his heat with the fastest Novice time (2:49.02) and went on to win the Trophy Dash and Main. The Novice star now has ten wins listed after his name, Jimmy led the Main from the start with Dale Woolridge and Kenny Weakley following him all the way. This was the last TT on this track until the big one on October 2nd but there will be a few more TT's at other Northern California tracks in September and you can bet that all the riders will be racing in an effort to get in shape for the 1U.lapper with the big purse at Champion Speedway.
