Maico-mounted Casey Folks led teammate, Red Van Buskirk and his Greeves through ~~ loops to win, it. A little close desert 'dicing with, CaseY,saw the, ground jump up and hl~ Red when he wasn't looking. But he held off the pack for his #2 spot. 'Final results saw 'Shane Ross' Greeves 3rd and 'Dutch cunningham 4th as overall winners. ' • The firecracker sent the riders to the smoke bomb and off for four 12-mile loops. Tom SCales was the day's har~ luck guy, as he snapped his chain on the way to the smoke and was retired. TwO of the day's winners were last off the line. casey Folks had a uttle starting trouble, 'as did Bob Tooley. Bob appears to be having a bad time with his machines the' last few times out. Either they won't start, they conk out, or something else happens. This time he haa a flat tire and still rode his Yamaha three loops with a slluare~off wheel, to win in the 100cc Expert class. The 100cc Amatetir went to Dan Darwin on aHodaka. Second was Dale Ferguson. (Was he riding his wife's scooter???). The course was laid out by Max Switzer and Terry Grieble and had, a few dowIihills -that were so steep that a parachute would have come in handy! Many a rider was airborne on the fitst go-round, but no one was hurt. The soft sand made a good landing at the bottom. Excellent weather conditions prevailed. It was cool and comfortable with no wind. The terrain was good except for one spot. Mil}e Snider swore a tree, objecting to the early a.m. roor of the motors, reached out a branch and cut his fuel line. A'quick repair in the pits; and Mike swung on to th~ finisb; Lonnie Lawrin, having no soft mud to cushion his fall, staYed aboard his Yamaha and took the 250 Amateur trophy. The highlight of the race's, was the return from racing retirement 'by Herb Hill Sr. Herb is the local Valvoline oil Distributor and Greeves Dealer. He piloted his machine \ in fine style while' his son Bill (256 Expert) • sat this one out.' Pop went down at' the bottom of one hill and got plumb tuckered out cranking his beasttolife." I rode as fast a.s I could but this stuff is for the youngsters," he stated as he was told he was 4 in the 250 Amateur and placed 12th overall. Not' bad, huh? • Shure' didn't look any worse for his efforts, although I missed seeiilii him in his short' pants and straw hat. This was also the first time out for Bultaco's latest motorcycle. The '100cc Lobilo niade ita debut and: I believe, ran good except for what sounded like fouled plugS. Art's M.C.shop on Fiernont street in Vegas is the local dealer for Bultaco and maybe we have a challenger for the Yamaha twin 100 and those flashy Hooakas that have been ·wimiing the Nnada'. Aggie Predic's HOT Sep'e.'er a' Asco' The biggest and most important portion of the motorcycle racing season is coming up the first two weekends 0 f september, at Ascot Parll., according 'to J. C.
