Novice professionals Phil Todd and Marty MacDonald put on a wheelto-wheel performance past the checkered black and white :ast Friday night at Ascot for one of the closest finishes in the Lightweight Class this season. Todd clearly edged MacDonald's Sprint on his Yamaha but tbe outcome as they rounded the north turn sharing axes was anybody's guess. Ralph White returned to California • • from back.east battled long enough to pocket another Ascot Expeble up Sam's commanding lead and finish with a quarter-lap lead. It was a tactic that Tanner had won with many times, but where was sam that night? Down on the pole while White rode circles around him. "They said keep it down lower,· sighed sam after the races. ·So I did and got beat.' A bump on the noggin couldn't. slow the good Grief down. hut it didn't pump him up either. He and Ron Kruseman duelled marvellously in Randy's wake with equally matched machines.
