COOLIES COLUMN BY Wes Cooley The August 24th MotorcYcle News. printed in England, contained an excellent article on the front page regarding the U.S. Six Days Trial Team." America's Silver Vase ISDT team will ride a West German Maico two stroke in Sweden next week. Tbe team is composed of Bud aDd Dave Ekins, Charley Bockey aDd Jack ArlzmaD. All will be mounted on Maicos. Dave stated that !bey would have liked to have ridden Triumpbs as usual but !be Matco factolY offered to deliver two 3:1O's and two 36O's to tbe line. Tbe team is sPOIIsored by CBS Television woo are sendillg a unit to SwedeD to make a onebalf boor color Wm of lIIeir progress to be sbown on I1Ieir Wide World of SPOrts program•• The article has several other comments concerning the team and their past history. I'do think it's wonderful that the English press gave the Americans such a nice plug, especially on the front page. This' newspaper has a circulation of 102,000 per week and is coosidered the leading weekly world motorcycle publication. I also think it's Quite interesting to see that a company 'such as CBS is interested in motorcycling to the extent that they would sponsor a team to participate in Europe. I wish we could entice other companies to spend a little of their promotional budgets in this same area. I think with a little work and emphasis on international racing, we can get some people interested. I bope to be making a velY tmportlUlf aDDOUDCement in tbis column nen week whicb will concern all tbe riders woo are interested in ,scrambles in tbe soulhem Califomia area so teU your friends to check Ibis column next week). If evelYtbing works out as planned. I lIIink most of lIIe dirt riders will be able to eitber witness or perform in a really outstlUlding event, lIIe (irst of Its kind In tbe United states. The ACA rule books are just off the press and will be mailed to all competition riders some time this week. The rules cover fiat tracking, both lightweight and 500cc, as well as road racing, GP and Production. Motocross rules will be added in the near future. These rules confcrm to the Federation Internationale De Motorcycliste specifications. Anyone 'who is not a memher and would like a rule book may obtain one by writing to lIIe ACA office, P.O. Box 247, Fullerton, cali!. There is a charge of $1.00 for printing and postage. • • • • •
