The Ventura Twin-Wheelers were the host club, and although they only had about ten working members, they managed the event very well. They hosted an unexpectedly high 269 entries and gave out 73 trophies at the end of the day's racing. The track surface, slicker than the riders expected at times, threw some of them a little out of shape! The grandstand crowd got more than their money's worth of action in quite a few of the events. One of them was the lOOcc Amateur class. Jim Northern demonstrated that you can slide a little bike just as well as a big one, and although hotly challenged by fellow Honda rider and Scramblers M.C. club member Marty Engels, Jim took first. passing Mike Tillman who had taken M.e. There were quite a few 250 Amateurs who could have taken home first place. It almost looked like an Ascot Park Novice race with the likes of Ken Sparkman, Gene Cannady Phil Todd and Marty MacDonald on the line. The race waxed hot and heavy with Phil Todd going down. Marty MacDonald taking a high and sliding spectacular groove and Ken Sparkman emerging the winner after the early lead. The 250 Expert motocross went to Bultaco-mounted Rick James who had to beat off a terrific attempt by George Omo Jr. on a ve ry fast Montesa. Jim Bassey, always a threat. had to retire early in the second moto when his chain came off. A cold high fog rolled in by the time the big bikes were finishing their battles for the day and people wishing for some real warmth found hot racing in the Open Novice Main. Guys were going down right and left. but Larry Shoemaker on a Triumph won out over BSA-mounted Lynn Kason. Bruce Bassey on a Triumph took third proving that racing talent
