NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP from 1 by two (count 'em 2) inches at lJIe fini sh line! Ralph White was sick in the pits on his gas stop, but cUm bed back on his Matchless to finish the race. Dan Haaby, favored for one of lJIe front-nmner positions, didn't geL to race -- his ride never showed Up. Buddy Parriott chugged along for 13 laps on his Norton twin hefore dropping out. ID lJIe two preliminaries to determiDe starting position in the UD-miler, Nixon served notice when he edged Rayborn in one of them, and Eddie Mulder did a surprising thing when he soundly defeated Ro~er Reiman in the other. SO-MILE COMBINED AMATEURI EXPERT LIGHTWEIGHT RACE • In away, the Saturday lightweight contest was a preview of Sunday's National go. Gary Nixon led the first 11 laps of the 17 lap pavement race. Then Cal Rayborn and his H-D Sprint took it away through lap 15. Part of Nixon's rubber tank mount got loose and was blocking a carburetor, slowing him down. Gary found the trouble en route, fixed it and took back the lead on lap 16 and held it to the checkered flag. Until he crashed on lap 12, Daytona lightweight champion Robert Winters was snapping at the tails of the two leaders. And on lap 10, Grand National Champion Bart Markel lost it at over 100 mph, demolishing his ride. Bart was ok, and back on the grid for the 11 D-miler the next day. Bultaco ace Jess Thomas, fresh a season's road racing practice in Europe, scored a well-won third. Chuck Jordan, Lincoln, Nebraska star, unloaded in his heat race and slid a measured 285 feet. He picked it UP and finished. Nixon had won the Des Moines lightweight race in 1964; there was 00 race in 1965, so that gives him two-in-a-row. He is the first to score a dQuble win in both the lightweight and big-bike races. 3 (Results and point stan«ings 011 page 16) MOTORCYCLE LA W EXPLAINED Motorcycle owners were reminded recently by California Highway Patrol Commissioner Bradford M. Crittenden that they can be cited if they transport their motorcycle on a vehicle and obscure the license plates, the lights or the driver's· front view. "A motOl:cycle cannot be carried on the front or back of another vehicle if it covers head lamps , turn signals, stop or tail lamps, or the license plates, or if it extends above the hood and obscures the driver's front view of the road," Crittenden said. "The increased number of motorcycles being purchased in California for use on vacations and in conjunction with camping trips makes it imperative that the applicable laws be understood,· Crittenden concluded.
