Then came the exciting 500 Novices - not too many of them, but that only made them go better! Clarence Pittman on 11 Triumph had the lead with Dirt Digger member Bob Ward on a Matchless behind him. Lap after lap Ward drew up closer and th!m after the yellow flag was shown, he really made his move. Coming out of the sweeper onto the home straight. the leaders were almost ne~k and neck and only the judges on the I1nish line could see who had won, it was that close! After two black-flagged starts the Open class ,Amateurs had a Royal Enfield to follow with Ron Pierce aboard. Dick Vincent had taken the lead but then went down. C.C. Gerr ardy. the guy who had been really winning the Open ,Amateur class lately in District 37 took the win in the Open Expert class with' his Triumph, chased by another Triumph ridden by AI Holley. A special mention should be made of the 100cc Expert class. In motocross heats the two real challengers were Mike Lane and Rick Elisarrarras on beautifully prepared Hodakas. With two wins to his t:redit, Lane was coming out of the sweeper, tapped the rear wheel of the man in front of him and crashed extremely hard.
