, DAYTONA Eof C PROVEN " THE 32 TO 40 The Choice Is Up to You TO 1 LUBE I have been interested in buying a motorcycle but with all the different types and styles I can't decide which would serve my purpose best. I would be very grateful if you could send me your ideas on tbe best cycle for my specifications. My use for one would be mainly on paved highways and touring in the price range between $500.00 to $1,300.00 and would have to be able to pull myself at 6 ft. 185 lbs. plus aoother passenger or camping equipment. I know it makes a difference if the purpose of the cycle is for a beginner but I am not a begirmer and have been riding a 350cc Jawa for the summer. Would you please as soon as possible advise me on what make would be best in yow opinion. DOUG ADAMS Burlington, Onto P .S. We shoot Sams pellet pistol for an hour or so at some targets we set up against the side of the garage. Sam kind of showed us up. This afternoon we all went over to Andy's house by the lake. We went for a ride in Andy's boat then after we went fishing until sunset. We hardly cau ght anything. Mark caught a 12" bass which was not in season (bass season that is), off the shore where Allen caught a cat-fish earlier. We had coffee and cake at Andy's while watclling television. We went home, watched T.V. some more and went to bed. We unloaded the boat and went out a couple of hundred feet. Danny caught the first fish, lt was a good sized blue-gill. We didn't catch much until about 4:00 Danny brought in a pretty large rock-bass. Just after Mark caught a similar one to Dans. Danny caught one more, after which I finally caught one of them. We drove home about six and cleaned the fish. The guy that owns a Bonneville came over with his girl friend. We talked for awhile. Had the fish for supper. I had the very demoralizing experience of hauling a boot full of broken toes to a hospital out in the area where we desert race, and then being refused admittance because I hurt myself on a motorcycle. The reason given me was that motorcyclists are a bad financial risk. The only way that I would be admitted would be to put up a bond of two hundred dollars. When was the last time that you took two hundred dollars to the desert with you? Of course I couldn·t get in, so I had to drive all the way to Los Ange les for treatment. I've suspected all these years that the only place this so called hospital had the Hippocratic Oath printed was on the rags used for cleaning the bedpans. Last weekend, in a fit of overexuberance, I did myself in, and again needed the services of a hospital. A state policeman who was busy giving a ticket said that the nearest hospital was Swan Memorial in Palmdale. I had never heard of the place, but by this time, my co-conspirator who had a broken shoulder, and I, were in so much pain that we would have gone to the neare st car wash if we suspected they would have treated us. From the moment we arrived at the night emergency entrance, the whole thing was like a dream. I have never met so many nice people in one place at one time before. Immediately, they did everything in their power to make us comfortable. Within ten minutes of our arrival, both of us had been X-rayed and knew what we bad broken. Just in talking, it seems that almost everyone who works there owns or is going to purchase a motorcycle. We were still dressed in our grubby riding clothes, but still we were treated with politeness by one and all. Another source of amazement were the two Palmdale policemen who came to the hospital to take the accident report. Two nicer gentlemen would be hard to find anywhere else in Californla. This epic drama could go on forever, but please allow me to get just one point across. This small hospital out in the middle of nowhere is a place that we should all support. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying to go crash off a cliff so they can haul you there for treatment, but I am saying that the next time your zYgomatic mandible gets stuck on a rock, or you leave a large sheet of your epidermis in the sand, go talk to them at Swan Memorial Hospital, 1212 East Avenue S, Palmdale, California. The phone number is (805) 947-4155. JIM DAVIS North Hollywood I finally received my watch in the mail and Mark got a letter from his mother. We went out looking for jobs. There Isn't much work here in Jackson. We didn't get anything. Tuesday, May 28. 1963 .. Looked for jobs again couldn't find anything. I wrote a wnch of letters and post cards to everyone. we didn't go fishing because it was threatening to rain outside. Wednesday, May 29, 1963 HAD PANCAKES FOR BREAKFAST Got upwent down and got a paper. We went down to a department store where we took a stupid test. The reason I call it a stupid test Is that every time I take one it makes me feel stupid. Thursday, May 30, 1963 INDY RACES We got up perty late, Mark started up his bike and went riding somewhere. I laid outside on a table and listened to the Indy Races on-the portable radio. I decided to go fishing so I asked Dan if he wanted to go. He did, so we drove down to Clark Lake. I went in the store and bought some new batteries for the radio. Then we drove the truck down to the bank and unloaded the boat out of the back. We went out to the same spot where we caught the bass last time. We got several strikes on artificial nightcrawlers. I finally hooked a large mouth bass. It jumped about five times while doing actrobates in the air. I caught several more bass. Dan didn't catch any. After a couple of hours the fish stopped biting and I just laid in the sun listening to the races on the wireless. There were lots of water skiers on the lake, sure wished I was with them. We drove home to clean ow fish. The one I caught measwed out to 17 inches. June cooked us some hamburgers after which we had some choclot cake, and boy was it good. Mark played wha-hoo with Sam & Andy. Parneli Jones won the Indy "500" I was sure he was going to wt I think that Clark did the greatest job by finishing second. He drove a Lotus-Ford and did great for a rooky from Scotland. (Continued next week) .. • • .
