PRADO F. . pap I • fun to watch. They tuck in and remain tucked just about all the way around the" track, but still manage to pass each other and really race. Another McDowell, Kirk, took the 100cc Expert-Amateur class, beating off persistent opposition from Hodakamounted David Ham. Keith Mashburn took third after crashing (again) and spent the third moto sliding high in the turns and doing wheelies, just generally having fun as he knew he couldn't catch the other guys. The 125-175 class was touch-and-go for a while. Don Alfred on his potentsounding Honda was in there really trying against Bultaco-mounted Jim Doron who wasn't feeling u~to-par physically. But in spite of some wild eXhibitions, includiDg a trip - to the grouDd iD the half-mile, Doron still maDaged to rack up eDough points to wiD. In the Novice 200-250 class, DoD - James and Pete Antista went at it iD great style, with a real scrap that could • .. and led the group a r 0 u Dd to the checkered. Returning from a two-year retirement when he quit in the top ten, Ronnie Knowles appeared in the $ClO-OpeD E,,pert class ahoard a Goldie and proceeded to show the troops that he hasn't lost a dam hit of his riding ability in his lay-orf, by taking second over-all! Larry Wilburn ahoard his Triumpeting Triumph was the winner, even after sliding out and going down in that good old turn after the jump. With the di !ference in cc's between the Open class machines and the 500's, it was interesting to see just where the dirference counted. Wilburn can pass anyone any place seemingly, -not having to rely on those extra ponies and the straightaway, but some of the guys on the Goldies were tearing into some of the other big jobs. They placed second and third a ver-all despite some hard ridin g by Joe Roberts on a new TT-Special and Floyd Conrey on another Triumph, but in motocross heats, you never know until points are tallied. Interesf ran high as the 250 Expert Main went' to the line. David Ham on his new Montesa had WOD his heat in real style, and everyone was waiting to see how the big race would go. David blasted off and took the lead over Car~ Patrick, Dick Brittain and Jeff Runyan. After a few laps the pack sorted themselves out behind the flyiDg Ham with HOndamounted Dick BrittaiD in secoDd and Carl Patrick on his Bultaco, third, all of them really wailing. ApproachiDg the jump Brittain decided this was the time to really challenge and closed on DaVid. He went a little catty-wampus in the following turD nearly taking Ham with him and that was 'Pat's· chance. The reD}aining yards were quickly closed and aD the yellow flag lap Pat passed David • Keith Mashburn enjoyed slicing. ......................................................... • •••••••••••••••••••• ITALY SPORT CYCLE Kirk McDowell twists It ON! 500cc Amateur Bruce Jackson, with his luck going with him for a chaDge. won his class aD the Beezer, with RaDdy Hall als 0 aD a BSA and Bo b Forster OD a HODda really worklDg at it behiDd him. The Novices weDt well iD spits of being almost haked into jerky by the sun and wind while waiting for their motos to get going. Ed Enochs looked good in practice, but was unable to ride his class when something didn't work right. The Open win went to Gene Smith on his Triumph with Karol SDOW on a BSA in second. Snow really went, keeping Smith busy, but just watch Smith's style sometime. He's tall and slender and rides leaniDg forward over the tank with his elbows out in the air on either side iD some of the turns, quite differeDt from most of the ·gang, but it really works for him ... he goes! Mike Chamberlain on his Triumph WaD the 500 Novice class. When this guy makes Amateur, he's goiDg to make things interesting for them! He's hard to beat. Gerald Haylek on a BSA was second and Ed Beeching managed third despite engine problems.
