Edwina and Bob Llvlneston of Oranee on their recent Latin Holiday. (Continued (rom last week) The next morning as we packed our cycles, we had our usual on-lookers, amazed at how much we could carry, so compacUy. And, as usual, some of them took our picture as we rode away. We like to think we left with them a good impression o( motorcycling and showed them just how much (un it could be. It was very obvious to them that we were having fun, and many remarked on this with just a hint of envy in their voice. Many knew nothing whatsoever about motorcycles except the sensational stories in newspapers, Back in the saddle again and on to Guaymas where we ·ate our box lunch on the beach. This spot reminded us of Newport Beach and Balboa. Beautiful large homes edged the beach. Short afternoon ride to Hermosilla for our last night in Mexico. We made a poor choice of motels, for even Irv couldn't eat the food this time, and a couple of doors away, singers and guitar players were evidently practising for an evening's engagement. We had loved the strolling Mariachis. but these just did the same number over and over. After an hour, I thought I knew it bY heart myself. They s topped at ten, but at 2 a.m. they returned to their room, singing and playing, unfortunately, as they went! Saturday· March 19 We were awake early this morning, excitedly looking forward to crossing back to the U.S. A. At Santa Ana. where Mexican Highways 2 and 15 meet, we ignored Route 2 which we had taken coming down and continued on 15 to Nogales - quickest route to some good U.S. food. As we surrendered our permits at the Mexican side of the border we thanked them for their hospitality, and then _. there we were _. standing on U.S. soil again. If you've never left your country for several weeks, you can't possibly imagine our relief, happiness and gratefulness to be back. The Customs Inspector was a big jolly man who greeted us with, "Welcome to L.B.J.'s Great Society", and we shook Double hands with him as if with an old friend. When he had completed his inspection, we asked him where in town we could get a good hamburger. He laughingly directed us and we set out for the best meal we'ed eaten in ages. Sunday • lIarch 20 It was very cold riding this morning and we soon stol1J)ert to out on extra clothing. By noon. we had discarded it, and by the time we reached Yuma, it was very warm. Stayed in Brawley for the night, as we didn't want to ride through to Santa Ana. No fun arriving if everyone is in bed! 1I0nday • March 21 Packed the motorcycles for last timeguess we could have done it 10 our sleep by then. All of us were excited at prospect of getting home. Riding was very pleasant until Whitewater Grade. where we had very very high winds. and it was cold. We learned later that the road was clo sed to trailers, etc. about an hour after we came through. Lunch at Corona, and how people stared at us here • it's different than in Mexico. These people don't have the same friendiiness in their stare that the Mexicans did. Seemed as though they immediately downgraded us with a glance at our helmets. Only 22 miles to Irv's shop where we had decided to go first. Finally we drove in - - after 3500 wonderful miles to excited greetings and picture-taking. Had we had fun? Yes, we really did. We had had a ball! Were we ever tired and sore? Of course! But after a night's sleep, we fel t fine. Which motorcycle performed the better? Both machines ran beautifully. No trouble with either one, so, how can you say? Would we do it again? Well, we're thinking more in terms of Canada for next year. After all, we've been to Mexico. -0 Footnote -- _. -Mrs. Edwina Livingston and Mrs. Dorothy Seaver were guests of honor the very next saturday evening, March 26, at the Normandy Inn in Fullerton, where their husbands presented each of them with an 18 - inch high trophy, engraved: 1966 - Mexican Tour SUPER Goodsports Award And how many other wives can boast of that! • • .. • • Friday, July 22nd, 1966 Graham Speedway, washington TT Steeplechase EXPERT MAIN 1st Jim Paternu - Norton 2.
