Markel set a steady pace after finishing 6th in his heat and came up with a well earned 9th place in the pay line and ten more national points. Former c ham p Dave Palmer passed Haaby in the final two laps to nail down 4th place to keep the Triumph string going. On the basis oftwo national wins, Mulder has now jumped to 4th place in the nation standings--75 behind Markel (See standings on page 16). Box 4!8, Long Beach, California • Amateurs Blaze Away The nation's top two Amateur TT riders again put on an Expert-type riding display with Rich Thorwaldson reversing the Castle Rock decision from two weeks ago. Rich took the win from Jim Berry in a close one all the way over the entire 15-lap distance. On Friday night Thorwaldson was the fastest Qualifier with a new track record for the Amateur riders. Thorwaldson. John Bradford and Jack Konle were the three heat race winners with Konle the fastest in new record time. Problems kept him back in 4th place at the finish in the final. Bradford was a solid third. Bakersfield's Dan Reed won his second straight novice final on Friday night to take a tighter hold on the "B· class point race. The next TT will run on the first Saturday night in August with another slated in August on Friday night. the 19th.
