I want to tell you right now friends it was hot under that 120 degree sun, after coming out of the shade trees of the ponderosa near Lancaster. Finally at 10:30 the banner did drop and everybody ate dust and spit sand all the way to the smoke bomb except the leader. who was in the clear. This course incorporated a slight variation from the old course by adding a new sandwash different from the old one, some new, unbroken trails, a few miles of the old trail, the famous whoopde-do road and a new fire road which was hard packed and a real slider, some new desert trails unbroken about 3 miles farther and as cabby as yesterday'scorn (until after the 1st 75 riders went over it), then down another road to check 3 which was out of sight completely (you could really (]y down that one), then a quick left turn and 2 miles into the pits. This course was 14 miles around and they made 2 loops, the leader on the 1st loop was Triumph-mounted Steve Kirk, 2nd was Howard Beach also riding a Triumph, and third was Norton-mounted Mike Patrick. The se cond loop and the finish was Howard Beach I st overall, 2nd was Mike Patrick, and third was Steve Kirk. The first 250 novice in was Greeves-mounted Stanley Phillips who finished 9th overall. The trail bikes were held off for 5 minutes to let the big boys get underway, then took off for the smoke bomb on the same course, but they only made one loop. The first one to finish was Frank Morgan riding a Hodaka, and second was his brother Jack Morgan. Frank finished 50th overall and Jack was close behind him, 52nd overall. J.N. Roberts cracked the frame on his bike Saturday afternoon at Willow Springs riding 2nd overall, it seems he caught a rock from the back whee I of Jack Ross's bike who was first overall. He was a little leery of riding it so he entered in the trail bike class on his wife's Yamaha and he finished I !th, due to the fact somewhere along the course he picked up some barbed wire in his rear wheel. The first girl in was sandra Trullinger riding a Honda 90. After the run everyone headed for the Ponderosa Ranch and had a ball waiting for the trophy presentation which was supposed to be at three, but it was quite a job to figure out the results and trophies were" given out quite a while later. The next picnic hare scrambles will be August 7th, but Jack Ross will have a different system for figuring winners. There's still the 40% trophy payoff. Ali the riders except the trail bikes will ride as one class. This way the trophies will be passed out sooner so those who want to leave a little earlier than last time can do so. Hope to see you there. TWO- !! O!!hY ~!er (Continued from last week) -TWO WHEELS tbt II•••• Com• •Ionc to "'xlco vi. motorc,cl. . . . . . . .join th. fun coupl.l. Irv & Dottle Suv.r of s.nt. Slept in 'til 8 o'clock breakfast - then off to the huge Centro Mercado downtown which covers an area three city blocks by two city blocks. SO far, we have travelled 1700 trouble-free miles. lIonh, • March 14 On our way to the BMW motorcycle shop, we stopped at a Laundromat where they refused to allow us to do our own things, so grudgingly. we left it for the senorita to do. Unfortunately, as it turDed out later, she had thrown our things in with some others - colored and white clothes altogether - and we brought home a rainbow assortment of once-white undergarments! Mr. Luis Gonzales. such a nice elderly gentleman, owns the BMW shop in town, and has been in business there since 1916. We were at the sales room, and their service shop was two blocks away. Mr. Gonz8.les spoke no English, but he phoned his son, a civil engineer, to come over to translate for us and had his mechanic come over to help the men change oil in our cycles. They were just as friendly and helpful as could be, and were amazed that we had ridden there from Callfornia. In the afternoon, we went sbopping and that evening had a delicious tUnner at the beautiful Camino Real Hotel. We had Chateaubriand steak and Crepe Suzettes - - the works! We decided not to go on to Mexico City as time was getting short and from Guadalajara it is 400 miles - 12 hours of travelling time over mountain roads two days for us. - Tbe diary of Jim icbolsoa and Marty (Mark) MacDonald continues as the boys face their scariest adventures so far••• lIay 22. 1963 - W.d. ATE BREAKFAST & HAD FUN ,, , , ~.,... ~, , , • ',. .. .. ,.~~&: I. • , Got UP ate breakfast and had lots of fun. Ma, 23. 1963 - TIIur, "CHOCOLATE - CARS" Went down to Stony lake and fished I caught three. Mark didn't get anything. Came home. By the way I commented before on how shy Allen (Ally) was when we first arrived. it didn't take him long to overcome this and he is now everything but shy. He sure is a cute little kid. Danny is also a real nice kid he reminds me of my brother Buddy but not so wild. Mark is now racing the cars with sam as they have been doing for the last four and a half hours. I have written four post cards and three letters which accoun ts for the extensive report for today and yesterday. Oh, yes I, had a bowl of Chocolate ice cream. II., 24. 1963 - Frlh' SPIDER TUNNEL Took out the truck to some river. We fished on one side or the bridge for about four hours. We didn't catch much so we came back to our truck. We decided to go under the road and fish on the other side. There were two metal pipe tunnels, which let the river pass under the road. There was about three foot clearance from the top of the pipe to the water. We cut the engine and pushed our way through with the oars. We got about fifteen feet before we noticed all the cobwebs which were hanging down. Then we noticed those black six legged things that make cobwebs. Man-a-live there must have been two or three thousand of them. We were already laying down on the floor of the boat, but I thougtt I was going to pu~h my self right through when a black widow hanging down on his we b missed my nose by two inches. We didn't fish Packing TU.lh, • lIarch 15 Off to Lake Chapala for day. This is a lake 60 miles long and 20 miles wide where 1800 Americans have retired. It's a town about 36 miles from Guadalajara and it was here a small miracle occurred. While stopping to buY some Indian beads on the street, a car stopped behind us, also having California license plates. As he got our of his car, the man called, "Where are you from in California?" Irv walked over to him and I thought the man would drop in surprise. It was Chll!" lie Bawsell, former Sales Manager from Western Scooter Distributors in San Francisco whom we had known for years. It was he, in fact, who had first interested Irv in seeing Guadalajara - and now he had retired and come to live there. It's been a dream of his for some time and he loves it. We started back via a different route. one that would take us through Ajijic, the oldest city in the Western Hemisphere. Once again, "Bob's camera made friends for us as we stopped in that lil;tle town to take pictures. Wdn.. lI.rch 16 I think we were as excited at the prospect of heading for home this morning as we had been at starting out. Got a late start as we knew we would gain an hour during day. We had 300 miles to go today, but, somehow the miles flowed past easily, and before we know it, we were in Tepic. Had our lunch with us and ate it in the park. Arrived in MazatIan around five and found our same rooms available at the motel. It was like coming home. Thursh, • March 17 Noticed the date at breakfast this morning and remarked it was St. Patnck's Day! Our Mexican waiter could have cared less; in fact, he had never heard of it. seems so odd - at home one would be bombasted with Irish a, . on the other side of the road but crulsed up the winding channels. We went about a mile, through great big swamplands there were lots of ducks and likewise lots of duck blinds. We sherred (ie) a pin on the prop while going under a bridge, it hit a rock. We went another mile down, where we saw some musk rats and turtles. Oh ya, we saw abOut five cranes. We didn't catch any fish so we turned back. About an hour later we make it to the spider tunnel. We sure as heck didn't want to go through it again. After a lot of thought we could do nothing but go under it. the way we came. This time I left the motor running so I could keep a good watch for them stupid spiders. Well in we went, Mark was laying on the floor and I was crouching down while steering the boat on through. Spiders, spipers and more stupid spiders, everywhere you look all we could see was big black stupid spiders. We finally made it to the other side of the road. I think when we hit the side of pipe, and shook some of the black beasts lose, cause our boat was crawling with them. Mark killed a bunch of them. We got them all out of the boat, but Mark noticed one more who was playing Tarmn on the outboard motor. We fished a while longer then put the boat in the back of the truck and went home. (Continued next week) • • • MESA SPEEDWAY By Bob Gooding The Mesa Speedway is ready for it's ·Grand Opening· August 7th. Ray Alcaraz, promoter, states that he plans to have side-hacks on the half mile, and a jump contest with $1.00 per foot jumped going to the winner. Ray, in coopemtion with the El Cajon M.C.. will also present a full sporting AMA, TT-Scrambles event on his speedway, and get this a special class for Class ·C· riders. The promoter also says that TT Expert Travis Petton has been assisting with the track preparation. The grandstands are installed, plus full facilities. Class ·C· racing is planned at a future date, but in the meantime sporting riders will be welcomed at tbe Mesa, located in Chula Vista just south of San Oieco. limed from Pacific Higbway 101. (Practice at 10:30). Double songs on the radio, but here, the "Girl from Ipenema" held sway. Got an early start this morning as we had a long trip ahead - 375 miles. Strong winds plagued us all day until my neck ached from trying to fight it. This was desert travelling. with no shade trees avallable for our lunch break. Finally, pulled off to a grass-roofed cantina, ordered cold drinks. and proceeded to take out our lunch and eat. Be b decided to take pietures and the many truck drivers eating there enjoyed it hugely. SO did the three young waitresses who asked Bob to take a picture of them and then asked us to autograph it. All of this in sign language, mind you! Navajoa was our destination, and we arrived there about five, really beat from the high winds and hot sun. Our faces had been plenty burned before, but this night we were really something to see. Talk about four owls! Our helmets pretty much protected a ur foreheads, the goggles left white circles around our eyes, and the lower p art of our faces was a dark reddish brown! I certainly didn't feel very suave and sophisticated when we entered the dining room that evening. A shower and change to a dress helped some, but nothing much could be done about the brown and white face, however, some people dining there came over to our table to inquire if we were the two friendly couples on cycles. When we said we were, they couldn't get over the fact that we all looked SO neat and clean, and that we girls were in dresses! Where in the world did we carry everything they wanted to know? We had had compliments before on our neatness and they alwayS lifted our spirits. As our spirits were slighUy dragging this paIticular evening after such a hard day this was really balm for Our souls. EveJi so, Edwina and I were in bed by 8 o'clock and the men followed soon after.
