This film has got to be one of the wildest, most far out films ever seen at Santa Monica Auditorium. The surf crowd came to see another all out su rt film with nothing but the same old shots of bi g waves in Hawaii and local surf he roes in action. Well, the burnt nose, long hai r crowd was greeted with something new. The opening shot was a night view at flatlrack action. To the accompaniment of an unknown jazz sound track , the audience was treated to some excellent overall views of what goes on every Friday night at good old Ascot P ar k. One scene that stands out is a slow motion north tu rn spill by Marty Mc Do nald. Moving along. the film landed next at a back ya rd group of musicians practicing for a recordi ng session. At the studio this same fa r out group of ga rba ge can lid and bongo players was accompanied by a rec ordin g of Kate Smith singing «God Bles s America ". He then gave us a view of Wilshi re BIvd, t hroug h a crystal prism, a look at the crowds at Redond o Beac h, the freeways . a trip to a local garbage trash dump, jets la ndi ng at L .A. Air port, mo re surfing, and a medieval fai r he ld in the San Fernan do Valley. As his poster said, it was " A montage view into the crystal world of action". Although I don't think half the audience understood what Rohloff was trying to put over, no one got up and left. I first met Grant last ye ar at Hopetown. This was his first motorcycle race and he shot up a lot of film that day. Parts of this day 's s hooting turned up next in ' HUH?", followed by some solid color surting footage , and slow motion moo nII ght waves. Surely the highlight of this film has got to be the next few minut es. Following Eddie Mulder from the Burbank T riumph Shop to Ascot . we were treated to some film magic never attempted before - night c olor film of flatt rack . SOme shots were almost like daylight, oth ers s o dark you could not tell what was going on. All of this action was punctuated with angle vi ews. upside down views. slow motion an d speeded-up action . The cl osing s ce nes were of Eddi e Mulder doin g ' whee li e s" on a mountain road . plus some pictorlcally beautiful count rys ide views broken by the sudden blor of Mulder streaking by on the rear wheel. The cl osing s cene s , shot in reds and yellows . a re truly avant gard e filmin g at its best. To sum up my own opinion of " Huh?", I will say that I ha ve never seen anythi ng quite lik e it. It is prog ress in terms of film making . Rohloff does not follow any other patt erns set up by co ntemporary s urf film makers , s uc h as Bruce Brown. W will let you rea ders know when it e ild, new, will be playing i n you r area.
