Guess we were th e only ones in a hurry! Weather was very warm. Our whit e jackets and helmets reflected the sun , keeping us coole r, a nd made us easily visible to approaching drive rs. At noon we had lunch in bea utiful Guaymas, by the ocean , a truly delightful spot and a welcom e change from t he heat. Food was becoming a p roble m - we were getting hungry ! At home we al l li ke Mexi can food and go o ut especially to get some. But , three ti mes a day ? We tri ed their" Americ an" dish e s and deci ded we bet ter stick to native foods. UP a nd at ' em agai n. Th e count ry s ide i s very int eres tin g her e. many littl e vil la ges. Obregon is a particu lar ly upand-cornin g agric ult ural c ity . Gas stations are not plentiful , so we pulled in whenever we saw o ne, eve n though we had only gone 50 miles since las t stop. The next one could be too far . T he re is one stretch of 125 miles witho ut a single gas station ! Goal for the day was C ulia can. Ve ry h ot, a nd we were glad when our motel was in sight. T hat, a nd every othe r mote l in town, was full , due to a Rotary District Conference . Even tho lr v is Pre sid ent-e lec t of his Rot ary Club he re at home, I 'm afraid we all thought some unkind t houghts about visiting Rota rians , for it meant driving another 142 miles. I sho uld explain t hat t here are motel s in only ce rtain cities ,some c lose togethe r , some very far apart. And, when our book said ther e was no ap proved motel, they genera lly me an t that the re was NO motel, app roved or otherwi se , Th is fac t co mpletely i nfluenced our mil ea ge per day. M zatlan was the next a c it y listed with motels , it was late aft ernoon, and we di dn' t want to tra vel after da rk. We lost t he rout e signs agai n, and thi s t ime a friendly motorcycle policeman esco rte d us to the route , and o n as far as t he city li mit s . We had been warned many ti mes not to travel after dark, and we foun d out why! T he many an imals roa ming around wer e a pro blem, but the real pro blem was so me or the Mexican dri vers witho ut lights on thei r vehicles and also drivin g 0 0 the wrong si de of the road!
