HALF MILE ST ORY • ASCOT RREWORKS For the first time in a month Sammy Tanner was the first rider acr oss the line in the opening night holida y weekend of racing at Ascot. The Flying Fl ea scored a s weep and ran his total win record for the yea r to 30 races , of which 27 of these ar e on the Asc ot oval. With ha lf the s eason left to go, Ta nner is now just 26 wins away from se tting a new all time win rec ord for one year. The rec ord is 55 wins on a half mile track. Sammy had to turn back Ralph White and Elliott Schultz twice. F irst in the trophy dash and finall y in the main e vent to record two more big victories . It was a breez e in t he final for Tanner, who bad not won a main event s ince t he first week in Jun e. His win in the dash was his third straight , t;ling a se aso n record s et earli er by Gene Romero . Romer o got off i n the dash . trying to keep Tann er from winning. Bodette Returns With a Bang • . Pe te Bodette cli mbed back i n to the amateur limeli ght by winning t he feat ure inhis s econd week back from ashoulder inj ury. It was his 5th win of the year. He also picke d up anothe r heat race win in his at tempt to < regai n the point lead. Poi nt leader, Casper Grie f dropped his mount in the heat rac e and did not run in the final this week. Bodett e had all he could handle in the final from the re-charg ed Shorty Seaborne. The crash-kid from former se asons s howed up on a new rig and ran the pants off Bodette in the flnal afte r warming up earlier hy winning the s emi. Seaborne passe d Bodet te twice on the final lap but could not maintain the edge across the lin e. Novice BattI e Don Roberts and Marty M acDonal d t eamed up to half Larry Pru ett in the novice final for a mild ups e t. Pru ett t ook the lead away from Roherts on the second lap and led for the next four rounds before both Roberts and the charging MacDonald both re- pass ed to finish one-two with Pru ett taki ng third. Earli er in the evening Pruett won his I ith straight heat rac e to tie the all time novice win record in this divi si on. It was Roberts ' second main event win of tbe year and gave him a few more points e dge in the three-way battI e for top novice honors. A 115cc OSSA was ridden slowly for a change by Steve Pederson to win against all commers in the economy run held in conjunction with the road races at the Spirit 16 meet at Willow Springs July 3 and 4, 1966.
