Thursday night at South Gate Raceway saw on of the most exciting nights
of racing during the season. Begi nning
with the 50cc class trophy dash and
main event. Gary Calkins, riding a
Benelli for the rirst time, won over
Dave Smith who has only heen bea ten
once in the 50cc class this year when
he ran out of gas. Dave had to settle
this time for second place.

main was, undoubtedly, the most exciting race of the evening, with the lead
swapping hands many times, the evenwinner Mike Spitzer on his HarleyDavidson. Greeves-mounte d Lee Stumpenhaus ran second, Gene Canady took
third on his Bullaco, Ivan Oden fourth
on a Honda, and 250cc poi nts leader
and trop hy da s h winner, Rick Woods,
had to settle for rHth, wit h t he speclator favorite , Steve SCott, on a Bullaco out for the rirst time this year,
finishi ng in sixth pla ce.
T he short track scene now looks
mor e a nd more promising with the announcement of a pra ctice se s si on Saturda y ni ght. June 25t h at 6:30 for the
500cc singles . Th is will be just an
e ven ing 's practice session to see if
enough interes t ca n be gene rated in
the 500cc single cylinde r Class A type
rac i ng to possibly make it a wee kly
eve nt. A hike must he single cyl inder
and it must be 500c c s. With all the
co mpe tition type 500 single s i n the
Southern California area t his should
provide enough ent rie s to make this
Class A s ty le short tra cking go over
with a bang. Naturally, sa fety Qua lifica tions su ch a s helmets, leathers,
e tc. mus t be me t.
